Best Gaming News Website?
Any tips?
Basically I want to keep up to date with gaming news (specifically PC and Nintendo) and I want to break my disgusting Kotaku habit. Is there any VG news site dedicated to actually enjoying games instead of any social or political garbage?

There's no gaming news site that I would recommend. It's not exactly a good alternative but what I do is check Neogaf from time to time as all news and controversies end up having a thread there.

Replace Kotaku with Siliconera.
NeoGAF is indeed a good place to catch gaming news (not so much a good place to discuss gaming though).
DualSHOCKERS is still a half decent gaming news outlet.
For general reviews, I find http://www.hardcoregamer.com/ is the only place worth a damn anymore (click the reviews tab). They also have a decent news tab that is also the default main page.
For JRPG and WRPG reviews RPGFan is still pretty decent.
For esoteric retro wankery, HG101 is always a good time.
If someone is good at using Metacritic's and GameRankings.com's search engines, its very easy to keep up with the latest releases for any particular platform, as well as what upcoming releases are.

I use dualshockers as a general news site
I also check gamefaqs regularly to keep up with release dates (in case you want to pre order things), particularly before Tuesdays and Fridays (when new stuff typically comes out)
Gamerankings, when I just want to see the general critical buzz surrounding a game
Other than that, this site, some gaming podcasts (Player One generally covers everything happening in gaming) and the two best friends play channel on switcher (youtube) who I check for entertainment and also to discover any fun, cool games I should play as they're generally pretty good at keeping up with the coolest stuff in gaming both niche, indy, as well as AAA, blockbuster releases. And they play a lot of cool older games too
Hardcoregaming 101 is great just as an encyclopedia of retro gaming knowledge, though I disagree often with the opinions expressed in their write ups. At times, I wish the site would just focus on information while keeping opinions out of it

I agree with you, HG101 should write the entries in an objective and factual manner and leave it at that. The writers are also terrible at dropping spoilers all over the pages about any given game being discussed. I mean just because a game is old, that doesn't mean the person reading about it has already played it. Great site though overall.Gamerforlife wrote: At times, I wish the site would just focus on information while keeping opinions out of it

Re: Best Gaming News Website?
I've read a huge portion of HG101. Maybe most of the content there.
It mostly consists of "retrospectives" rather than reviews. Opinions are dropped, yes, but generally only those that are near-unanimous ("TMNT on NES is hard and confusing, ActRaiser 2 has awkward flight mechanics, Langrisser Millennium is much weaker than its predecessors, etc..."). Of course additional judgment is passed in the kusoge section, but that's more of a celebration of notoriously bad games.
I have no issue with spoilers on the site. Their purpose is to document and analyze retro games, not to provide previews.

It's kind of like going to a film archival site where you read about a film's creation, history, and importance versus its peers, but then the author suddenly out of the blue ruins the film's ending just for the fuck of it. Not everybody interested in that film has already seen it. And not everybody interested in an old game has already played it.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I have no issue with spoilers on the site. I have written about ancient games in objective and informative ways without spilling the beans about their plots. There's no reason HG101's authors can't do the same. Not that I don't appreciate HG101, I do. It's just that one aspect that burns my ass.
