Too good for a number scheme, Windows 10 announced for 2015
Re: Too good for a number scheme, Windows 10 announced for 2
Possibly, though the Client Hyper-V that Windows 8/10 include isn't really built for gaming n' stuff (I think RemoteFX will let it do 3D though). Windows XP Mode in 7 was similarly business oriented. VMWare is more tuned for letting you play games, far as I know. VirtualBox also has experimental Direct3D support.

Interesting.
So do you think then that using VMWare or VirtualBox running XP in 10 would actually allow me (us) to circumvent the SecureRom block-out? I mean, in my head it makes perfect sense. But the only VMWare stuff I've ever messed w/ was Linux/Android experiments and I don't really know a ton about it all.
I mean, I'm not sure how well XP runs under virtualization to begin with. But if this is in fact a relatively easy (in the sense that I already have a copy of XP) solution to get blocked discs running again then I'm pleased.
The sad reality is that not everything has a no-cd patch.
Although if necessary, I guess I'd be willing to learn how to digitally sign stuff myself if that was my only option and I really wanted to play something.

Virtualizing it in general, far as I know, should work. The VM is its own thing, so WIndows 10 restrictions wouldn't apply to it.
Main point was that the virtualized hardware isn't always made for gaming. The stuff MS includes is not (RemoteFX seems to still be limited to bare metal versions of Hyper-V, not the Client version).
I'd try VMWare for it if you wanted to experiment. It's free for personal use (down near the bottom) anyway.
Performance tends to be mixed, but for somewhat older games it'd probably be good enough.

sweet. I think I'll give this a try if I can find some spare time over the weekend. I'll report my findings back here!

noise, just use disc-check cracks. The publisher assholes should provide them, but they don't give a damn about supporting older products.

But not every game has one is the problem.
Re: Too good for a number scheme, Windows 10 announced for 2
Yup that's for sure I've got a few games I couldn't use because of that and not even exactly because of Windows 10, just because they don't want to work in anything made since XP.
By the way anyone here still avoiding Windows 10 and having their OS get more aggressive moaning about trying to upgrade? I'm not getting the little corner box anymore so often, now like once or twice a week on boot I get a nice box in the middle of my screen maybe 50% of the screen size if that which slides left/right like 6 ways over telling me how wonderful it is and why I have to click to get it.
Annoying.

I found an article that specifically talks about this: http://www.howtogeek.com/228689/how-to- ... indows-10/
They suggestion VirtualBox. Any reason I should go w/ VB or VM one way or the other?

You might be interested in this. I've been using this for about a week on both my machines and it does the trick. Best of all, if you ever decide on finally getting 10, you can turn it off and on at will. No installation, just a stand-alone executable.

That seems handy. Shame MS are such punks they won't allow people to just say no.
I'd prefer running 10, I liked it, but when bugs started cropping up which slammed my computer speed like I mentioned awhile back in this thread it had to go. Other than how it oddly hides the ability to do a thing or two I'd like access to (which I'm forgetting what it was right now) it was good until it flipped out.
