That's exactly what this means.

A fine opinion to have when (5) of the (12) games are games you personally nominated...and yet:

I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing. I'm making the point that in the interest of "getting this done w/o any arguing" it was rushed. In your own words - a member with 5 of his picks on the final list, the thing about the list that makes us happey is that it was done smoothly?

My inner dsheinem has awakened. Getting something done smoothly should not be the criteria. Together Retro is one of the defining things about this SITE. TR and the Best Of / Hidden Gems articles are what get people here and then ultimately stay in the community.

If active members like myself and Flake can't even get into the discussion before it's decided how can we expect are less active members to chime in or feel included. I'm not big on voting on everything - but I think this is one area where it can generate more discussion and feel more inclusive.

All respect due to the homey, but I mean, just 6-hours into the thread there were already front-runners being declared? Again, same point...where's the fire?

Don't get me wrong - without noise, popo, bone, bogus, ack, exed, and AJ this site would be a ghost town some days - your input is invaluable, no doubt. I'm just trying to emphasize the point that I think TR is one of the things, perhaps the only thing, that truly separates us as a community and additional time for goals of TR, and games for TR, should be discussed.
Fair enough points in this post (although I thought you were against voting? Maybe I've misunderstood along the line).

I'm not actually too concerned about the discussion going on longer and other games being considered actually.

I am concerned about games being dismissed just because they don't fit some arbritrary criteria of being short (and therefore almost definitely action focused) or not having high scores. I don't think excluding RPG, Strategy and Sim games because not everyone has time to finish them is very conducive to participation at all.

No lie, I genuinely don't believe that Together Retro has ever been a big driver of traffic for the site. I've been here since what, 2009? I've been participating in Together Retro since 2010. We've played a bunch of games of all different types, and the only consistent factor is that it's generally the active members of the site taking part, not outside members.

I've absolutely noticed a worrying lack of members on the site lately, but I think positioning these Together Retro games as a cause (or a solution for that matter) is misleading. Together Retro hasn't driven a userbase to this site as far as I can tell in the 6 years I've been a member. By all means I'd like to be proven wrong.

The site articles definitely do though. And do you want to know why? Because the site articles pop up in Google searches. They have high SEO. Barely anyone just stumbles across Together Retro though.

My concern is that we're not a site that's dedicated to a specific genre. We're not a site that's focused on arcade games, or pinball, or shmups, or even 8 bit consoles. We are, very broadly, a retro gaming site. And I think Together Retro should be repesentative of that - including a wide variety of genres, developers, consoles and eras. And in doing so, better representing a wider base of retro gamers.

This is where I agree with AJ. If the point of this was just to get more time and possibly more people in, that's OK, but nothing at this point should be vetoed either. We 7 or 8 came up with this and I would like what's here to stay and be considered but with room for others to speak up if they choose. It's been a week since the thread started now. and through nearly 30 pages I also found things to be smooth this year and I appreciated that. Every year's thread doesn't have to be full of fighting and arguments and I'd like to keep it that way.

I'm happy to hear more discussion especially from members who haven't voiced an opinion yet and would potentially like to be participating in TR. As I said earlier, my only hope is resulting in a calendar that (A) more members are happy with and (B) more members will participate in playing.

There is no fire, by any means as it is still October. I say, people should still suggest and make cases for the picks and people can discuss it.

Absolutely! If it's true that 7 members are responsible for 74% of the posts in the thread, then it stands to reason that something approaching a consensus was reached relatively quickly (although 29 pages among that handful of members is still pretty darned representative of a healthy discussion IMO!). Even still I don't think anyone has indicated that this should necessarily be the final list - cut it, wrap it, print it. I would love to see some additional discussion of what should or should not be included on the calendar and why.

Perhaps what needs to happen at this point is that we need to discuss the titles that we feel should be stricken from the current list in order to make room for additional suggestions?

I'll go first. Harvest Moon has seems to be the most Marmite entry on the list thus far. While I think this sort of polarization has the potential to generate some interesting discussion, if I'm being realistic those that aren't interested in playing it in the first place probably won't be swayed by its appearance as a TR title. I myself was probably being a bit heavy handed when I said that I wouldn't play it at all. I'm curious about the game, but I basically envision it as one long fishing mini-game (or insert other mundanity masquerading as a "fun activity") of the sort that has appeared in countless JRPGs, and I usually do everything I can to skip those sorts of mini-games. Secondly it's probably a bit cutesy for my tastes. I have twin 6 year old girls, and if I can be honest for a second by the time they are in bed for the evening, I'm all cutesy-ed out. I'm ready to shoot some virtual baddies in the face for a while. But ... those are merely my personal reasons for expressing disinterest in Harvest Moon. I do recognize the historical importance as a title that combined a sim game with an RPG, mixed in adorable little fuzzies, and still managed to wind up with something that was greater than the sum of its parts. Should historical significance be enough to rope in discerning retro gamers? Well ... in a perfect world, yes, but I suspect reality doesn't necessarily concur.

So, we've mentioned sports games from time to time. How about one of the most fondly remembered titles in the genre, Tecmo Super Bowl? Even if it was only limited to games actually called "Tecmo Super Bowl" we're talking about NES, SNES, Genesis, and PSX. If Tecmo Bowl were rolled into the party, the available ports would have an even greater spread including digital releases.

I'm not opposed to most sports suggestions, but honestly, American football (and Baseball, which we've done before) have almost no interest this side of the pond.

I'm much more open to say, Basketball or Ice Hockey though. They're just more fun somehow, probably due to their faster pace.

An international sport like Tennis might be more universally appealing perhaps.
