I really want to stress to everyone to not pass up on playing Star Control II. I understand that you may not feel like you will enjoy it, but the game is absolutely phenomenal and is a game everyone must play and experience. It was developed during the time when games were starting to go into transition. You can see the PC games of the early 90's have a lot of growing pains and game design was very awkward and uncomfortable for the time.

Star Control II is a great example of a game that is timeless in design. It offers a great mixture of old-school game mechanics in its combat system, but offers modern game mechanics that were very rarely replicated during that time, which is a testament to how much fun the game is.

You can play this game on PSP, iOS, Android and softmodded wii's as well. Outside of Shenmue, there aren't many games where I strongly insist that people play and Star Control II is one of them. Trust me, you will enjoy it and if you don't, just talk it out, because I find that for the majority of people, a game is only enjoyed when you understand how the game is meant to be played.

Please, of all the games to disregard, don't disregard Star Control II, you will seriously regret it.

Tecmo Classic Arcade on Xbox (thanks Bone)
and Virtual Console (Wii & WiiU).

NES copies are going for less than $10 loose now. There's also the spiritual sequel Fire N Ice on the NES, which is going for over $100 (!)
US NES copies might be, but PAL A NES copies are like £25.

I was under the impression Solomon's Club is a sequel. Am I wrong? If it is a port, I'll probably go with that.

If we go with this list, we should think about what order the games are gonna go in. I feel we have more time intensive games than normal, so we should try to spread them throughout the year somewhat. We should probably put some shorter games around the summer months so that people can fit them alongside the summer challenge too.

Something like this perhaps?:

Jan: Knights of the Old Republic (near launch of new movie)
Feb: Metal Slug
Mar: Star Control
Apr: Oddworld.
May: Daytona USA
Jun: COD/MOH
Jul: Pitfall
Aug: Solomon's Key
Sep: Harvest Moon
Oct: Alone in the Dark (Halloween)
Nov: R-Type
Dec: Pokémon

I put Alone in the Dark in October for Halloween and the FPS games in June as previously mentioned. The new Star Wars film is apparently out December, so January seemed like a good idea for the Star Wars game. Pokemon was put at the other end of the year to seperate out the 2 RPGs.

Pitfall and Solomon's Club are short so I put them in summer where people either have elss time or are also participating in the summer challenge. I felt like Harvest Moon and Star Control are the other long games, so I spread them out. I could be wrong about Star Control though, I literally have no idea. I put R-Type in a month away from Star Control to seperate out games with space shooting elements. Then I just randomly put the last few in.

It's a straight port as far as I know, with the addition of an item shop which should make the game a little easier.

I'd like to see R-Type in a month other than November, because I head up the Shmup of the Month (similar to TR) and every November we have our community tournament, which is the only month we don't play one game, so it would need to be in another month so that the way I organize it stays the same.

I'm ok with those summer challenge games right where they are.

Especially since you can play it with The Ur-Quan Masters port. It will run on the PC you're using to post on Racketboy.

The 2600 version of Pitfall! is also unlockable in Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, which did see release in Europe on the SNES, Megadrive, Mega CD, and GBA. You might consider going that route if it is the cheapest way. I intend to give The Mayan Adventure a spin that month myself.
