Definitely get the PC version for the aforementioned patches. KOTOR 2 was by Obsidian and it ends up being a darker take on many of the Star Wars themes. It's sort of Chris Avellone exploring the stuff in Star Wars that doesn't seem to jive with him. I'd say the characters in KOTOR 2 are more interesting than the ones in KOTOR. Additionally, they sped up the underwater suit (now it's a space suit), so the motion looks ridiculous but you don't want to blow your brains out from boredom.

I do think Micro machines is fun, but I love Daytona USA. I love arcade games; I love Sega; I spent many summers in my youth in Daytona, Florida. This game is firing on all cylinders for me.

So much truth here.
noiseredux wrote:I think KOTOR needs to stay. Its a wrpg and it's Star Wars and it's a classic I haven't played. I am excite. We have done a lot more 8 and 16bit rpg's in the past. I like the change if pace.
I tried to play KOTOR once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away. What a bore. I couldn't bring myself to give a damn after the first hour. Why? Because the controls feel disconnected from the action. For instance, I will tell my Jedi to attack the enemy with his "vibra blade" (no light sabers early in the game) by pressing the A button. He does nothing immediately. Four or five seconds later he may or may not decide to attack. I repeat the command. My character takes his dear sweet time deciding whether or not he wants to attack. Meanwhile the enemy is attacking fast and furious. I can see that my character is running out of health fast, so I order him to run away. He thinks about running away. Maybe he'll get around to it.

The whole game feels like one long escort mission wherein you have to escort your own character. Your character doesn't go where you want him to go, or display any sense of self preservation. He doesn't want to fight or run. He just wanders face first into danger.

I found myself hoping my character would die, because I didn't like him very much, and I didn't want to continue playing.

Cool. I will plan on playing each of the following next year:

Star Control II - I will get The Ur Quan Masters up and running on my PSP.

Pitfall - I will see if I can "patch" it again. I will probably spend some time with both it and its sequel on my 7800.

R-Type - This is my favorite shmup. I will take a spin through the R-Type Dimension version on my PS3.

Oddworld - I will play the PS1 original on my PSP.

Alone In The Dark - I have this game running on DSx86.

Solomon's Key - I will play the NES port.

Knights Of The Old Republic - I will play this on the Xbox.

Daytona USA - I will play the DC port (and I will try to finish up the PS2 port of Virtua Racing the same month). Should be a blast.

This isn't my favourite line up ever, but I'm happy with how smooth this whole thing went. I won't join every month, but I'll try and join in where possible - I could always be pleasantly surprised by a game after all!

My plans:

Star Control - 3DO perhaps? Could we possibly not have this one too early in the year so I can have a bit longer to try and find a copy? Not excited by this, but it's regarded as possibly the best game for 3DO, so I might as well give it a try.

Pitfall - I probably won't play this one, I don't have an Atari and I don't want to buy an Atari collection either tbh.

R-Type - I'll probably go Turbografx here, although Master System is tempting too.

Metal Slug - I have the collection on Wii, I'll play through them all this month probably.

Pokémon - I have all 3 of these, so any are possible, but I'm tempted to play FireRed instead, as I've played the remakes far less.

Oddworld - I think I'll go for PS1.

Alone in the Dark - I think I'm gonna go for 3DO here too. It's another I'm not excited by, but picking up some good games for 3DO sounds good to me!

Solomon's Key - I think this looks dull, but I'll give it a fair shake. This only seems to actually be available on NES realistically, and it's pricy - are there any other options for consoles?

COD/MOH - I probably won't bother. I have nothing against the games, I just don't like the genre.

KOTOR - I'll try this out on XBox. It's somewhat outside of my comfort zone, but a lot of next year's list is, maybe I'll love them.

Daytona - Urgh. I bought this on Saturn this year, and also sold this on Saturn this year because it's terrible and I hated it. I'll be sitting this one out for sure.

Harvest Moon - Undecided between PS1 and PSP right now, but leaning to PS1.

I'm disappointed by the people who already seem to be writing off even attempting Pokemon and Harvest Moon, but I guess I did the same with COD, so whatever. I'm gonna give a lot of other stuff out of my usual wheelhouse a go though.

One of the most interesting things about the line up for next year for me is how few of the games will get played on Sega or Nintendo consoles. My usual go-to systems are SNES, N64, SMS, Mega Drive or Saturn, and basically none of the games next year are on those. Should be interesting.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but there's an open source port of Star Control 2 called Ur Quan Masters which is for all intents and purposes the 3DO version. It's free and it's pretty great.

For those who have expressed disinterest in Star Control 2, you should at least give that a shot because it really is a fantastic game.

It's also on -

Game Boy under the name Solomon's Club
Tecmo Classic Arcade on Xbox (thanks Bone)
and Virtual Console (Wii & WiiU).

NES copies are going for less than $10 loose now. There's also the spiritual sequel Fire N Ice on the NES, which is going for over $100 (!)
