Pissed at Gargoyle's Quest II

OK, so I'm playing Gargoyle's Quest II on my NES and it's really pissing me off. I've just acquired the Fallen Angel's Wings so I can hover longer, but I can't cross the first gap in Gaza Valley, before Sittem Desert. The FAQ I found says you have to go as far out off the ledge as you can before you jump and hover at the peak of the jump, but frankly, whatever I do I fall into the lava. It's pissing me off. Anyone know how to get past this?

I'm not familiar with the game but I checked and there were some walkthroughs on youtube.
