Yeah, P.J. Soles is in The Butterfly Room! She used to be married to Dennis Quaid. After they divorced, Quaid went on to marry Meg Ryan. And Meg Ryan played a supporting role in...

Amityville 3-D

This is the third of the 12(soon to be 13. Who keeps watching these? Is it TSTR? I bet it's TSTR) Amityville movies. I watched the first one in the series some years ago and just was not impressed. But since it is an established franchise in horror, even if not one of the most popular, I figured I would return to the Amityvilles and find out if I like any of the later entries more than the first one. The answer for Amityville 3?

Nope.

What can I say? Not much happens, it's mainly dull save for a couple moments of greatness, and the movie tried to rely on a 3D effect that has only gotten worse with age. Tony Roberts plays a reporter for a supermarket checkout aisle rag that investigates and busts open paranormal phenomena. He cracks wide open a fake seance scene in the old Amityville house but then decides he likes the place. Since he's an aging dad in the midst of a midlife crisis and getting a divorce, he decides to buy it and move in. And...nothing much happens.

Most of this movie consists of people telling Roberts they don't want to go in his house, and Roberts being like, "Come on, what? I ain't afraid of no ghosts." Then his daughter dies, his ex-wife moves in because she is crazy and thinks the daughter is in his house, and Roberts gets a bunch of paranormal investigators to hang out. That's when the demon shows up! Now if only he had more than 10 seconds of screen time. There are a couple of freaky moments, such as Roberts' photographer partner bursting into flames in her car for no reason, but they are few and far between, and the exposition in the meantime is bland and mostly consists of the same conversation. But even then we get bombarded with cheesy moments for 3D effects and a badly drawn fly that I guess was supposed to be spooky.

This is not a bad film, per se. It's competently acted, and the plot is consistent even if the most interesting aspect doesn't get emphasized until the end(you had a demon in the basement and you used it once? COME ON). But the 3D is gimmicky and obvious, and the movie is about as bloodless as a desanguinated fish. It all just feels tired. Even Meg Ryan's enthusiasm doesn't bring this flop to life, and she is by far the most enthusiastic thing in this picture.

You want a good haunted house movie? Watch The Changeling with George C. Scott! But avoid The Amityville Horror and avoid Amityville 3-D.

We took a break from horror films last night and watched:

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988). It is a campy, ribald comedy that puts Cassandra Peterson's comedic and physical assets to great use. It is by no means the greatest film I have ever seen, but Cassandra Peterson's one-liners are consistently funny. Moreover, the film does not take itself seriously at all, and I think that anyone who enjoys a god 1980s "slobs vs. snobs" comedye will enjoy it. (It is streaming on Hulu+ right now; so, anyone with the service can watch it instantly.)

is that the one where Elvira inherits a castle or something? It's been years, and her movies confuse me. I always preferred her as creature feature hostess rather than actress.

Yep. She inherits a mansion from her aunt - who was a witch - and her evil uncle wants a book of spells so that he can become the master of the night.

I agree that she is best as a creature feature hostess. She was - undeservedly IMO - nominated for a Razzie after this film, but her acting is by no means painful. (There is an absolutely awful song, dance, and rap(!) number at the end of the film, however, and it actually drags the movie down a good bit. If I watched it again, however, I would probably find it unintentionally hilarious.)

No worries, Tektoro. Go right ahead and post about games too. This is a catch all thread, it's just that some of us post about movies a lot.

Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMZONL8x8NE

Yeah, that's right, this one has a lamp monster. The evil demon haunting the Amityville house managed to escape a pack of priests by jumping in a lamp and getting itself shipped to California, where it can plague a new family by pretending to be their dead father. Hijinks ensue as a young priest tries to track down the lamp while it terrorizes Grandma's house. Ultimately Father Not-Karras arrives and successfully helps the family dispel the evil by destroying the lamp, saving the little girl it is trying to possess. Does this sound awful yet? Because, funny enough, I think it's the best Amityville I've seen so far.

First and foremost, this movie is bloodier and does a much better job of keeping the horror going. It infects one woman and kills her with tetanus. It drowns a plumber in black goo. It possesses a chainsaw and messes up the basement. It melts phones, burns people, turns an eleven-year-old kid into a creepy psycho child, cooks the family bird in a toaster oven, and even chews up a teenager's hand in a garbage disposal. That's right, we get a blood-spraying garbage disposal scene. There are certain things that bother me in horror movies, and for some reason maiming by garbage disposal is one of them. Yuck.

When the lamp isn't screwing everybody over with its demon possession, they are busy arguing, freaking out, trying to maintain normality and failing...basically things to keep the story moving while the demon preps to kick their asses or possibly maim or murder someone new. Sure, an ugly lamp is a terrible villain, and watching the demon enter it via the power cable like a cartoon does nothing to really help its case, but thank goodness SOMETHING ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN THIS ONE! My third Amityville, and I finally wasn't bored! Sure, it ends on a hokey note with a possessed cat, but its badly done glowing eyes are way better than the awful fly drawing of Amityville 3-D.

The priest character also gives this movie shades of The Exorcist, though obviously not as strong. You probably won't be biting your nails at any point, save the obvious build up to the garbage disposal scene. Seriously, you know it's coming. You can see it coming. The movie basically tells you, "THIS IS GONNA HAPPEN." I paused, shuddered, and then got myself through it. But there is some decent build up to all of the horrible moments and some solid red herrings too, even if the movie doesn't reach the intensity of the greats in the genre. Early on in the film, when the grandmother is about to open the box containing the lamp, she asks for a sharp kitchen knife...emphasis on sharp. Nothing happens, but it keeps you on your toes.

Well done, Amityville. Took you long enough. Now if only you didn't have to use a freaking lamp monster to do it!

When I was really young I read the Amityville Horror book and soon after finishing it the book became unbinded really creepy. Then when the Exorcist first aired on TV back when I was watching it with my cousin and during the movie canned corn or some shit fell out of my kitchen cabinet and we both freaked went to go check it out and the cabinet door was slightly opened and the can was rolling back and forth on the counter. Wtf.

That movie still is my most feared till this day, I once asked a priest if excorsims were real and he replied yes and that was not an appropriate question. I also use to lose sleep for like months at a time whenever I watched Nightmare on Elm Street in my pre teens, but I get a kick out of it now.

Oh man, I definitely agree that Elvira's a fun movie. I feel like Elvira is basically "Mae West for the 80s" but awesomely GOTHY and with an extra-ridiculous storyline. (I own it on VHS.)
I'm thinking I should finally try to see Elvira's Haunted Hills this month.
