Another AVGN game on the way.

I'm stoked. First one was a legit platformer / run n gun. Tons of fun.

I think I'm starting to "get" Zelda II. It's no longer this awful thing that I'm forced to acknowledge the existence of. I think some of the key for me was grinding the hell out of my sword in the first palace so that it was level 5 before fighting Horsehead and level 6 with the crystal boost. Then made it level 7 in the Swamp Palace and used the 8k experience from gaming Graveyard Palace to crank up my life and magic. Being able to kill shit before it could do lots of damage to me thanks to my inability to dodge/block consistently has really helped.

Yeah Zelda II is clunky but far from awful. I did tons of grinding last summer when I finished it for the first time.

I beat Zelda II for the first time recently and it is a bit clunky, but it's not too bad as well.

I always felt like I was making progress in some way. Death Mountain near the beginning of the game is the first real punch to the stomach. The final trek to the Final Palace and the Final Palace itself are really difficult as well, but thankfully, you can start over at the beginning of the Palace.

It's tough, but there is some good stuff there. But, leveling up all your stats before the final area really helped a ton and I would recommend that!

I quite enjoy Zelda 2, although it has it's flaws for sure.

I think Zelda 1 is more flawed overall, and I don't enjoy that one much.

Zelda II is awesome. I love it, and I would love for Nintendo to make another game in its style. (A 2D, Zelda-themed metroidvania would be awesome.)

You should check out some of the more obscure 80s Metroidvanias like Zeliard, Wing of Madoola, or (gulp) Legacy of the Wizard.

It's on my "to beat" list. I have The Guardian Legend in there right now, but I suspect it will be the next game in my Retron 5.

If you want to go in the "proper" Falcom order you could import Romancia for Famicom and play that first.

Or not. Because that game is pretty shitty.
