But ya ScummVM let me relive the old days a bit and it was great. Dosbox is a nice program but it still needs work, I'm looking forward to the day when I can play a lot of my older Dos games once more because I don't really have an old PC to play my old games...even though I should probably get one. Please share you old school PC gaming experiences here.
Old School PC Gaming?
Old School PC Gaming?
Was anyone here really ever a PC gamer years ago. I'm talking about stuff like back when Adventure games were all the rage like the Lucasarts games such as Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max, other ones such as Myst, but beyond that as well, the first Warcraft game, Diablo, Starcraft, Doom, Duke Nukem...anything. I understand that the site's main topic is consoles but I was just curious because I had many good times on the PC in my younger days and recently I've been able to relive them a bit and go beyond what I've experienced earlier. With the help of ScummVM and a few downloads I was able to play most of the Lucasarts Adventure games once more, I wasn't able before because I lost my FoA (Fate of Atlantis) disc, and I lost my box that had six Floppys that had Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Zak McCracken, Loom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade on them...I was bumming out

Yeah, I hear you. My mom didn't let us have a console for quite a while, so I had a Mac and Game Boy growing up. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is one of my favorites, my dad would play it with us growing up. I also really liked the Heroes of Might and Magic games. Heroes II was pretty much the biggest computer game among my friends that I can remember. Myst is good too, but I didn't really understand it until I was older. I played a lot of Dark Forces, but I was never any good at it. (I liked to use all the wacky codes)
I don't have any other adventure games aside from FoA, but I was thinking about picking up some after I discovered SCUMMVM. The problem I had though was that the FoA music sounded different on SCUMMVM compared to how it was on my ol' Mac, and I couldn't find a way to make it sound like it used to.
One last thing, I was looking on Wikipedia and found a list of game engines for running particular games on modern systems, check it out and see what you think.

I remember the Alpha War1 thing, but I didn't get it to work right or something. I've also gotten the old C&C games to actually run perfectly on my PC and I'm using Windows XP Pro, so I don't really see the reasoning behind that. I just wish that somehow Microsoft could do something to support the older DOS stuff instead of ignoring it, especially when it comes to games, because most of the time, projects like this fail or people give up. Of course I may get burned about saying that by somebody saying "Well I don't see you doing anything!" well thats because while I care at the same time, I don't care enough to actually try and do it. Programming was never my strong point.
Ya I missed the Diablo 1 days despite the fact that there were not many legit players. Of course me and my friend finally broke down and got trainers just mess around with in game which was fun because we could get the Player Killers back and they usually couldn't touch us but eventually it got old, I can see why Blizzard took it's Battle.net capabilities away.

I love playing stuff on JDOOM. Plus, I actually have a old 95 and 3.1, both of which are perfect for playing old games. I still want to get the diablo battle chest though. mebe I'll ask for that for Xmas.
I actually remember playing the demo of Duke Nukem 3D as a kid, along with the Diablo demo, Fury3, Indiana Jones and the fate of atlantis, along with The day of the tentacle (both of those last two are the fully voiced CD-ROM versions). I really should break them out some time, as they were a lot of fun. I've been playing tons of Warcraft 2 on DOS BOX, and with quad core CPUs coming out soon, I'm sure DOS box will be able to play quite a lot of stuff very well.

Doom shareware on floppies ftw
also Wing Commander games I was (and still am) very into, I have them all working atm using dosbox etc (well thats a slight lie (its actually impossible to have ALL of them working at the same time, because some of the settings needed for one overlap another one sometimes (usually sound acceleration stuff)))
having said that in recent times i havent been on my pc as much at all, ill buy any id game when it comes out, but thats about it really, and of course HL2 and Episode1, i have F.E.A.R. also
i mainly play Freelancer atm
