Site article thread

Post by alienjesus »

I was just thinking today that articles are drying up on the front page of Racketboy. I think we should try and make a concerted effort to write some stuff. I know I found Racketboy because of the awesome articles on the front page, and it'd be a shame to lose potential members because there's been no content for a while.

I'm just as guilty of not writing much as anyone else, so I thought we could have a discussion thread of what we would like to see written, and more importantly what we would like to write!

Some thoughts I had:

- We could do with updating some of the classic articles - especially the 'cheapest games' and 'most expensive games' articles which are quite out of date now.

- I thought I might try writing a series of articles on how to get the best out of PAL systems - things like whether you can install region switches, 60hz mods, whether games are region free etc. Also whether you can innately run RGB from the system too.

- Maybe we could write up some articles focusing on particular developers game libraries? I'd be up for writing up a retrospective on the likes of Treasure.

Anyone else got any ideas?

I have drafts of the 3DO (and CD-I) articles I've written for RB from a long time ago but have yet to finalize and submit to nick but would really like get those up as well as up date the original article. I'd also like to see some last gen stuff going up as well since there are potential future classics/gems and some games becoming rarer now.

I think the Vita guide would be nice considering it's easy for new comers to experience PS1, PSP games via its excellent emulation of such systems not to mention its niche overlooked library.

And last but not least dedicated guides to every game with level editors or game creation tools for the aspiring developer or people who love certain games and want to create something new with them.

Guide to battle card/ Trading card games. Yugioh, MTG, Heartstone, Battle Hunter, Culdcept, any and every game that includes cards/ decks into the gameplay no matter how different the mechanics maybe as long as cards/decks are part of the strategy.

I can contribute to any of these if there is interest.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Those articles are what brought me here in the first place, like many others. There's been so few articles lately that I never even look at the front page anymore, my bookmark takes me straight to the boards.

I think most of the people who used to write those articles either have busier lives now, or they've moved on.

Anyway, if someone wants to step up and trying doing some writing, there's a lot more documentation on retro games (SNES and prior particularly) than there was back when the site started up. It would probably be wise to focus on topics not frequently covered by other websites, such as "Revisiting PC Gaming in the Early 00s" or "The Nintendo DS Mod Scene" vs yet more articles about FFVII or Tomb Raider or SMB3.

I also intended to write an article about the Nintendo e-Reader back in the day, but I realised I just don't have enough knowledge about a lot of the cards to successfully write it.

I suppose I could try my hand at writing an introduction to Dance Dance Revolution since that whole series probably counts as retro at this point. But that might be too specific a focus and I'm not sure if people even have an interest in those games nowadays...

They don't. It's all about Pump it Up now.

PC Gaming is being approached the best way we figure out how to - a series of articles similar to our standard battery based on distribution service.

There are several mostly completed articles out there, and all the old ones need to be updated. This is just a massive undertaking and like you rightly stated alot of the people who wrote initially do not have the bandwidth to undertake this right now.

The biggest issue is that most people nowadays do not go to specific websites for articles, nor do they go to forums. They go to aggregate sites like reddit and twitch streams. We are a niche for a niche, but we will be the best niche we can be.

I'm totally up for submissions. I haven't been able to do as much from scratch or even updating old one as much between kids (2nd kid due any day now!) and my day job ramping up big time.

If anyone is interested, they can chat here or email me -- best place to start is to let me know what genres or platforms you're interested in and we can find what gaps can be filled in with a guide. There's plenty to fill in.

The "cheapest" and "most expensive" games articles are a PITA, especially because prices are really all over the place, and everyone wants a dollar value range, and that's thankless work and sucks to do.

I'd rather see them morph into rarest/hardest to get games and most common/easiest to get gems articles, where price CAN be a consideration, but you're really just talking about how easy it is to get your hands on something.

But yeah, things are brewing and don't you all worry your little eyeballs. Papa Bogus won't let things get all down in the dumps!
