33 years old and just discovered Pokemon - Where to Start?

Geez... Maybe I'll just emulate the GBA games then. I'm really only interested in Leaf/Fire. I am playing the Gen 3 remake right now so I'm not sure there is much reason to play the original.

DS question - Are B2/W2 honest to goodness sequels to B/W or are they more like B/W+? In other words should I skip B/W and go straight to B2/W2?


So far my want list is:

HeartGold/SoulSilver (one of them)
Platinum
W/W2 (like the cover art better...)
X (same reason, cool cover art)

I ignored black/white couldn't tell you, but you do have an interesting list.

I'd see if you can conquer happily FireRed first. They're really not that hard to avoid, especially if you don't buy online, or buy from a non-ebay store owning trusted online person. Even in this era of hard to see crap carts they're not impossible to sniff out. Over the last 5 years I've had Fire Red maybe 6-8 times and like 3 of LeafGreen and I didn't have a screwdriver on a single one and was 100% on real games.

Look at a lot of random 1st party games, see how Nintendo makes their emblem, the way the white ink saying (C) NIntendo looks like above the pins, the size of the ESRB box and the lettering itself and you'll see a rat.

Would you happen to have any recommendations for a non-ebay online store I should be able to trust? In person shopping would be ideal but is often difficult for me since I live in the boonies...

With online, as someone out it earlier, you're playing with fire. When browsing ebay keep in mind of the buyer protection that goes with every purchase. As standard practice goes, for ebay and Amazon marketplace, the higher the rating the more the seller is willing to protect it.

Avoiding ebay I can think of 2 that would at least carry the older Gameboy line of stuff -- Amazon and also eStarland which has done games for a long time. There are a few others, but they're mirrors of their trolling overpriced ebay outlets (dkoldies, hillbilly, and lukie games.)

Those last 3, you could check them. I have on occasion noticed they do odd sales on there that are less than the ebay average. I do know Lukie you can (or could?) inquire about the game you're getting to be sure it's in nice shape on the cart and not worn or beat up (or worse.)

Amazon and eStarland I think are the best bet though and estarland if you get on their mailer they have out like every week or two they have some fairly slick sales and promos too so if you get a few you can get a percentage off and free shipping.

Personally I'd stick to ebay because they treat sellers like crap to keep the buyers coming back with that protection. Even if you as a seller list as 'no returns' they will force you to take one if someone whines about it which is scummy. And the one and only other up on that, you get actual pictures of the game carts.

RE: the GBC games. I realize that they have a save battery like any other save-able game from that era, but did they do the whole clock day-night cycle thing too? Do they have 2 batteries?

They use the same battery for both game saves and the clock. This only applys to Gold/Silver/Crystal btw - earlier games have no clock, and the GBA games use flash for game saves and a battery for the clock. DS and later obviously use the systems internal clock instead.

Marlowe221 You absolutly must start with Pokemon Red or Blue for the original gameboy they are by far amazing. Now if you want something a little newer I'm sure you already know you can do leaf green or fire red they are remakes of the original. You really dont need to worry about Yellow since i feel its the same as Red and Blue but more geared toward people who watched the tv series and wanted to emulate ash ketchum all that junk. So if you enjoy the TV series hit Yellow if not just forget it. The emulator for them are great if your not able to find them for cheap. I have yet too (but im trying to find complete in box versions so ) Yea but after that Silver and Gold are great (or its remakes yet i havn't played them so i cant really recommend them) Its a great series but the originals just have this magic that is hard to explain.
