This post... made me feel fucking old.Nintendork666 wrote:This thread rules, time for another bump. The PS2 is over 15 years old by now. Claiming the PS2 as a modern console is akin to arguing that the NES wasn't retro in 2000.
Think about it guys: no hud menu, no HDMI, wired controllers, DVD drive, memory cards, no DLC, primitive online, etc. Anyone who doesn't consider the PS2 to be retro seems to be ignoring just how far console standards have come since its inception.

I don't really agree with this line of thinking because to me it's the games that define the age/how retro a system is, not the hardware. Sure, the controllers are wired (some of my modern controllers are wiredNintendork666 wrote:Think about it guys: no hud menu, no HDMI, wired controllers, DVD drive, memory cards, no DLC, primitive online, etc. Anyone who doesn't consider the PS2 to be retro seems to be ignoring just how far console standards have come since its inception.

The further games are refined, the less obvious the changes become. This doesn't make them any more or less retro in my opinion. Retro is determined by the age of the game/hardware, not how "modern" it remains. Going by your definition, two games released on the same day could be different levels of retro at the same time.GSZX1337 wrote:I don't really agree with this line of thinking because to me it's the games that define the age/how retro a system is, not the hardware. It's easier to transition from Destiny to TimeSplitters than it is to go from Halo to Doom, for example. Modern gaming feels more like an evolution than a revolution.

This thread is adorable. Anyone claiming the PS2 is "retro" reminds me of my local pop radio station DJs - the guys who say shit like "we're gonna throw it back and play something old school now!" followed by a Kesha song from like 2012. Bros, do you even Atari?
Modern "relevance" still comes into play. Sega's SG-1000 and Nintendo's Famicom were released the same day. The SG-1000 was phased out quickly and replaced by the SMS, and I don't have to tell you how far the Famicom went. Certainly feasible to think of something like the SG-1000 as being "retro" well before the Famicom. Some people even place the systems into two separate gens (2nd vs. 3rd).BoringSupreez wrote:Retro is determined by the age of the game/hardware, not how "modern" it remains. Dude, the Atari 2600 had a game come out in 2010. It's still relevant and not retro.BoneSnapDeez wrote:This thread is adorable. when the PS2 came out, I bought it because I'd be getting a new game console PLUS I'd have access to this new hotness known as "DVD."
Seriously, I feel old.

I feel happy and not old about the ps2. I just like the way I can just pop a disc in and no trouble, well if you got a good working ps2 lol. Like yesterday for instance. I went to try the ps3 since my kids aren't playing it no more, dusted it off cleaned it up and boom have to upgrade it. Then I have street fighter x tekken and that has to upload and update and install. Then once I get the game to load some 12 year old challenges me and kicks the crap out of me uhhh.
10-15 min to play one round. Damn it I just shut the game off and went back to the ps2 and played street fighter alpha anthology

Why would the PS2 be retro? It's not a RetroN.
