This game is my rock garden. I can sit in the maker for a few hours and churn out parts of a Mario stage.

I hope that in Mario Maker 2, the ? Mushrooms lets you turn into the character, not just a costume. We need a sanctioned DIY Mario Crossover.

So I stumbled across this user's levels in the 100 mario challenge and I really enjoyed it. I checked his other stuff out on his profile and it is filled with great stuff, with very few stars. I wanted to share his stuff and highly encourage those who like traditional Mario-style levels to check his stuff out, star it and comment on it.

This is his Super MArio World Level, "Garden Stroll," and is really good. (C7BE-0000-0035-35C1).

Poor guy only has a handful of stars and really needs to get more, because all of his stuff is high quality.

^ And that's the problem with the whole star system. It seems like most people are only willing to star crazy shit. Case in point: My auto play level only got 5 stars (last I checked). I really wanted to see if ANY auto play level would rack up stars, but I guess not, an auto play level wont get stars unless it's crazy hoopla. And that same principle is applied to all levels played. It seems most people have a crazy high bar they set to earn a star. It should be simple: If you had fun playing it, give it a star.

I knew when I set out to build my auto play level that it wouldn't be popular among the common type. I didn't wanna spam the sounds effects (club music and drum street beat music) and have all those close call situations in a Rube Goldberg machine. I wanted it to appear as if someone was actually playing the level, which doubles as the level actually being perfectly playable should you decide to not have it auto complete itself.

Not that it matters because of the current sorting methods available. If you sort by popular/most starred it returns levels that got tens of thousands of stars. How are you ever gonna compete with that? (You're not).

Giving a level a star is like a strict pass or fail. There should have been more of a rating system, like after you play a level you have to give it between 1 and 5 stars. It wouldn't be perfect (still due to the fact that everyone has their own tastes/preferences/etc) but probably better than the star system we have.

It's never gonna change tho, so we just have to deal with it. Nintendo can't simply change the way levels are rated with over a million levels already uploaded. I'd imagine that would mean either having to delete all the uploaded levels (never gonna happen) or they'd all lose their star status and appear to be "new" uplaods without ratings, and that would piss everyone off. It would also completely change the way you earn medals, so it's never gonna happen.

Bogus, you and I seem to have very similar tastes in levels, so on your word, I'm definitely gonna check out that guy's levels!

Similarly, I posted almost the same exact thing some pages back: http://racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 7#p1002327

I will definitely check it out! I am not too worried about the stars though, as we all seem to be progressing pretty quickly. The game has only been out for almost 2 weeks and we all are over the 100 star mark. I see a lot of people that make levels similar to our abilities and they have far less stars. I think it is important to comment on people's stuff. By playing all their levels and commenting on all of them, they see that in the notifications and always check it out. If they see that it is from the same person, they realize you are fan of their stuff and check your stuff in turn. It has worked out for me and is the best way that I can see for getting stars is by willingly giving stars to people and showing you are a fan of them.

There are so many people that have our viewpoint that I wouldn't be surprised that there are other communities out there working on this.

We shall see! I will check out that level though this weekend and let that person know that I am liking their stuff.

The thing is, people need to know that they are appreciated. There is a huge sea of garbage that is getting popular, because it belongs to a youtube personality or has gotten press for being impossible. If you reach out to people and let them know that they are special and their stuff is really good and let your friends know and they do the same for them, it should be reciprocated.... hopefully.

So go out there, play fun levels and reach out to people! If there is no community of positivity for the types of levels you like, go out and make it and lead by example!

P.S. I will again state that you all rock on the forums here and you should spread that love out to the rest of the Mario Maker world! Everyone should feel like their stuff is special, because I can assure you that there are great level makers out there going completely unnoticed and it may discourage them to make more!

Soapbox rant...done!

But, I was wondering if that would be the case if it weren't for Racketboy. Some of my levels would have no stars right now if it weren't for RB. I'm also wondering if some of my levels would have taken off by themselves if it weren't for RB. By that I mean, I make a new level and post it here. It gets 2-5 stars right off the bat from RB members. I'm assuming that gives it an initial boost, right off the bat.

I do think that your stuff gets put in higher rotation if it has a good amount of stars and comments, so that may be the case. Like I said, I see people who make really good levels have no stars and very few plays and they have been released within the first week of play. That astounds me and makes me wonder what really is involved in getting your stuff played.

I know that if I don't play the game for... say 6 hours, I will come back and check and my stuff has been played by about 25-30 with maybe 2-3 stars if I am lucky!

Anthony is probably wondering why he just got a ton of stars!

I just played through all of them. They were all fun to play through! I left him a few comments as well.

I found this when playing the 100 Mario Challenge on normal difficulty and it really stood out to me. For some reason this level only got 7 stars so far. I thought it was well thought out and fun to play. Check it out!
Yeah I just got a chance to play it and it is one of the most inventive use of the tools. I really really really liked it! his other stuff though... not so much. Kinda hard to grasp where he was going with the other levels. That one though. genius!
