Android Tablets

Post by marlowe221 »

Anyone have any recommendations for Android tablets for their emulation capabilities?

I know lots of emulators exist for Android devices but it was more the hardware on the inside that I figured might be the limiting factor.

I would mostly be looking to emulate handhelds from the GB family, DS, Game Gear, etc. Some DOS Box might be in order as well. I realize there wouldn't be any physical controls for the games but most of the stuff I would be interested in emulating would be turn-based/non-twitch.
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

As a general rule, HTC and Samsung make some of the best android hardware. I'd start there.

Consider me interested in this thread too.

I've strongly considered the Android Shield Tablet, but at the same time while I know it'll be rock solid for years since they went high on the specs (and I like it has a stylus too) the storage isn't the best. Yet it will take a micro(mini?) SD card to expand it at least.

I have a nexus 7 2013, don't buy it. They're a crap shoot on quality thanks to Androild Lollipop. Some of them overheat and shut down apps (mine) at least when it's in a case (still hot otherwise.) Some will randomly lock itself (sometimes in a row after unlock) ...mine again. Then they have a hell of a problem with Lollipop where they often will severely lag when tapping out words (maybe a bug with the word guesser, no idea.) When it doesn't fruitcake out the hardware inside can run anything and very well too as long as it's not 'made for X tablet' like some of the nvidia console game ports. If you did end up with one, keep kitkat on it and it rocks. :)

I can't figure out even with instructions online how to revert the OS and it's maddening. For some reason I get stuck half into it and it'll do a hard reset/wipe instead of a flash of kitkat. I'm thinking Christmas dough on this one as I need a functional solid last for years tablet.

I have a few emulators and games on my tablet and I use this link from fantasy anime

http://fantasyanime.com/emulators

They have a section on Android emulation.

I've downloaded the Yongzh bundle. It works fine on my tablet. The files are APK (I think?) and its not a verified program. Its the stuff that Android warns you about. I.E. Opening and running unknown stuff.

But it works. The interface is pretty basic and its pretty much the same program changed to suit nintendo and sega stuffs.

So far no frills. And it works okay.

The actual hard part is getting a wireless/bluetooth controller so you dont have to mess with touching the screen.

Good luck my peeps.

Wow I didn't know Project64 was even updated beyond 1.6 years ago. I kept that installer, probably haven't used it in most that time. :D

Now I'm going to have to look into this since you linked it in here I guess it's for Android too.

I wonder if they ever figured out the failures in their microcode that won't let Indiana Jones fire up.

The list of android emulators there isn't entirely complete. I had I think it was an android version of FCEU on mine until I wiped it maybe a month ago and it was fantastic and ran anything thrown at it with style. It's up on google play, didn't side load anything.

There has been a fork of it for a while that lets you play just Indy, it breaks most other games:

Back on topic, I use to have a dozen different emulators on my phone, then Retroarch updated and there was no reason to have anything else.

Is there a decent gaming tablet for under $200? I want it mostly for emulation on the go and pinball arcade, but I do have a bunch of android games through Humble Bundle. Bigger than 7 inches and external storage are preferred.

Related, does anyone know of a USBHID to BT device. Something I can plug a USB HID device into, then it syncs to a tablet via BT? A decent tablet that I can use the Blissbox 4 play on wirelessly would be portable heaven.

Well my Nexus 7 died tonight, it's finished as far as I can tell.

I tried to put KitKat on it again, and yet again it wouldn't take. So after doing a restoration and getting mostly through re-downloading my apps it just blipped off in process of one of the last few of them. At first I thought it was gone, then it flickered a few times when I tried a 2 button restart into the recovery area but it popped out. Hit the button and then it started to try and reload android again and the lights were out but I could see it barely under a bright lamp and it seized up. After that, it just went black...dead. ASUS makes a really shitty tablet from all the negatives I've seen about the Nexus 7 2013 version I have.

Now I'll need suggestions on a replacement. Not sure when I'll be able to buy the replacement which sucks but better to start looking now. The Shield tablet is still tempting, don't like the 16GB storage as that's a downgrade, but it can take an exterior card in the slot, but how good is running stuff off something like that?

Sure there's going to be some nice tablets for the holiday season coming up. Old models will go down and new models too.

There are plenty of sites with reviews and specs.

Keep looking for deals on amazon or tech sites, I guess

I'm still on my 2013 tablet too. It's showing its age but its chugging along.
