You can still get GBA SP batteries directly from Nintendo. Speaking of which I should buy a couple for the day mine inevitably die.

I suppose you can, but I'd rather use some rechargeable AAs or in a pinch normal ones if the need arises, plus as I said the wide body of the original is like a controller so it's comfortable.

For me the quality of the battery is not the issue. I'm sure the modern third-party batteries do just fine.

But how will you play your SP when no one makes those batteries any longer? We are retro gamers; we like to play games 20-30 years after they were current.

Ultimately, of course, emulation will probably be the answer.

I am still day dreaming of a front or back modded GBA (non-sp). I will probably have to pay the premium, however, and commission one or buy one that has already been done since my technical ability with such things is basically nil.

I've learned over time to take the path of least resistance when it comes to enjoying games.

I shoot for my ideal set up (in your case it is a backlit OG GBA).

If it is too expensive relative to the next best thing (an AGS-101) then I would go the for the next best thing.

If that doesn't work out (be it cost or rarity) then I shoot for emulation. Either with a GBA and a flashcard or PC emulation.

This is my own thing. Certainly not right for everyone. I ran into a similar issue when I used to own a GameCube with Phantasy Star Online until I lost them in a natural disaster. Three years in and the cost of getting a system, the game, a memory card, and a controller that has good sticks would cost quite a lot of money. The next best thing is the Dolphin Emulator and an ISO image of the game. Minimal cost for a controller like an X360 and you're good. I don't have to waste time tracking everything down and can use that time enjoying the game cause I can be dead tomorrow .

For all I know I can get hit by a bus tomorrow that is filled to the brim with passengers. That shit be lethal during rush hour.

I was never a DS guy (or really any kind of portable gaming until later in the PSP life - then 3DS and Vita) so after skipping a generation's worth of titles,I have a very modest collection of 11 games. But just added to the family as I found both Diddy Kong Racing and Sonic Rush for around $6 a piece complete and in very good shape.

Sonic scored really well so it perked my interest and I've been after a portable Diddy for sometime. Happened to catch a new auction that just went up for that very low price.

The DS has a ton of titles (around 2000?) so there's a lot to get. My collection is modest but I'm always looking.

You could use an AC adapter.

If you're decent at electronics, you could make a hybrid from the AC adapter and a lithium ion power pack for actual portability.

Failing that, emulation. Ultimately emulation is the only thing that will keep retro gaming possible in the far, far future.
