I find a good way to ensure a good variety of Pokémon types and abilities is to add one pokémon to your team before each gym, until you have 6. Then you can decide if you want to swap any of them out as you continue. I think it's fun that way too, because it encourages you to check everywhere between gyms to find something you think looks cool.
I played for a few battles with Exp. Share on just to see what it was all about and quickly decided to turn it off. I think I much prefer the old school method.

At this point I am 2 gym badges into the game and my team consists of a Marshstomp (my evolved starter) and a Poochyena. I don't really like the pooch much; I really should trade it out for something else. I have yet to come across any fire types or electric types. I also have a Nincada for Cut and Flash on the main map but he doesn't see combat really.

I'll have to agree on most modern 3ds exp share modules. I thought at first it would be cool saving me a lot of time leveling the little suckers individually, but in doing so everything ended up going overpowered almost to where the full threat was gone, other than the threat of breaking the badge limit where they won't listen to commands anymore.

Is this guide a good one for spotting bootleg GBA Pokemon carts? It is a couple of years old now but after reading it I was quickly able to spot a few fakes on ebay...

That's one way but there are several different types of fakes going around. I have several real Pokemon cartridges, used, where they were purchased in person years ago but in this day and age that can be problematic for most unless you have a local retro game shop. This gives you the opportunity to view the cartridge in person and make a judgement call.

This is a good guide. It'd help you when buying. There still may be some fakes that pass some of these checks though, so you can never fully know unless you open the thing.

That was a good guide, but not as good as it was in 2013. I've seen even in KY here in hand some even more convincing Pokemon bootlegs. The amazing only difference which made it even more scary was that the (E) logo was just slightly smaller. That E is listed on that link you got as #5, that was the only difference. The wrong font on Nintendo, the cart ID code, and even the gold seal were all proper...it even had the (c) NINTENDO ink above the pins looking right. It's very hard to spot a BS pokemon GBA game, especially I've noticed with Red and Green since it appears they're the most popular and easy for them to bootleg since they don't have the RTC in them I suppose.

There is an idiot proof way to do it, at least I think there is. I'm fairly certain the DSLite had some pirate sniffing magic to it and it would detect BS games and just straight up black screen not load them. I can't recall 100% if it was DS and GBA or just DS games it did it to. I'm sure you could google it.

For sure they've gotten more convincing. I picked up a fake copy of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones recently that was amazingly convincing. Passed every check until I opened it up.

When I got a genuine copy and compared I could see the difference in print quality if I looked close enough, but otherwise it was damned near impossible without opening it up.

Honestly, if I ended up with a bootleg copy of Leaf Green/Fire Red that worked fine and held a save game... I would be fine with that.

I'm not really a collector - just want to play the games. :)

That's good for you then if that's all that matters. I'd almost think it would be best if you did order some fakes. There's a bundle coming out of HK that some US people sell even for like $30~ I think which has all 5 of the GBA pokemon games bootlegged to near perfection as far as outward appearances go. Might be a cheap solution.

And yes without having a triwing screwdriver around you're playing with fire at this point with GBA games that are considered popular enough to do that with. When they're so detailed right down to ripping off inking the Nintendo copyright on the board above the pins and only goofing making the ESRB letter a bit too thin it's just too hard to know. A few years back the FireRed/LeafGreen games were safe, the pirates couldn't copy that shiny label, but even that they can now.

That's cool, and I agree. But, you might be several hours into the game when the save starts acting up. It really sucks when that happens.
