What was the last movie you've seen?

Same here. Over the weekend, we watched:

Inferno (1980). Created after Suspiria's surprise commercial and critical success, Inferno proves that much of what made Suspiria great was probably a happy accident. The film contains some of the same bold lighting and set choices, but everything about it is inferior to its predecessor. The soundtrack is vastly inferior; the film lacks Suspiria's visual variety; and the "surreal" plot seems like an excuse for poor characterization and pacing. Accordingly, while Inferno is by no means Argento's worst film, I cannot recommend it.

I've seen the majority of Argento's work. Very little of it would I recommend.

I think Opera is amazing, though. Everyone should see that one. I rank it above Suspiria, which tends to be the one most people gravitate towards as their favorite.

He's got a lot of really terrible and really boring movies though.

At any rate, did you watch Starry Eyes yet Jordy?

Not yet. We're saving it for October!

EDIT: Here are a few that are definitely on my list for this year:

The Body Snatcher
The Children of the Damned
The House of 1,000 Corpses
The Thing (2011)
The Village of the Damned
I Walked with a Zombie

I have all of these on DVD; so, they will definitely get a viewing next month. I will use Hulu and Netflix to fill in the rest of the month.

Which version of Village of the Damned, prfsnl?

As I've previously mentioned, I'm going back and watching the entries in long-running horror series that I haven't yet seen. These series must be from a trilogy at minimum, though I can't say they will all be considered classics. I will likely watch other movies too, but they won't count towards my marathon.

I will be watching the original 1960 version. I found it in a DVD two-pack with its sequel, Children of the Damned, at my local Food Lion for $5. (I have also read that the John Carpenter remake is complete garbage; so, I will skip it.)

Hell of the Living Dead, AKA Apocalipsis canibal, AKA Virus, AKA Night of the Zombies, AKA Zombie Creeping Flesh, AKA Zombie Inferno, AKA Zombie of the Savanna

Oh man, this has gotta be the worst zombie movie I have ever seen. Some scientists working to create a system to wipe out some of the Earth's population accidentally release a cloud of gas that brings the dead back to life, which then heads to Papau New Guinea. Meanwhile, a couple of reporters show up as well as an Italian SWAT team, who are apparently on both vacation and on a secret mission. In their SWAT uniforms. With sixty-year-old Thompson machine guns. And no equipment. And no idea what their secret mission entails. Add in stock footage of animals from tropical jungles and the savanna. And then there are the jump cuts where characters suddenly change their positions and their attitudes towards one another, such as switching who has a gun or hating each other to suddenly sitting around laughing together. And there is this undertone as all of these Italians interact with the natives that just feels vaguely racist.

It's not all bad, though. The music is good...oh wait, nevermind. The music was apparently ripped directly from Dawn of the Dead and Alien Contamination. But the footage of natives...no, that came from the movie La Vallee. Seriously, half of this movie is stolen from other movies, and the other half makes no sense. Characters run around shooting willy-nilly and change their motivations mid-scene. Day becomes night in a split-second, and our heroes completely forget what they are doing and act like lunatics. Heck, there is even a scene where our lady hero rips her shirt off to prep for meeting natives and we get a full view of her topless for a good thirty seconds as the camera just sits there and stares at her. If blood drips on you from the ceiling, or zombies walk up and grab the person next do you, do you stand there screaming until they can shove their hands in your face and tear your tongue and eyeballs out? Because in this movie, yeah you do!

Then again, this is exactly the kind of exploitative garbage fest I expect from Bruno Mattei, who was given a script but not the budget to produce it(which is admittedly something he was known to handle...though the quality he would reach is suspect at best). The script was written by Claudio Fragasso based on someone else's treatment as a Zombi 2 knock off, and Fragasso ended up paired with Mattei to handle the film. Unfortunately for them, the studio didn't do the rewrites they had asked for(and already filmed), so their original footage was almost worthless. They then split up, filmed different things, combined it with other movies, and released it. Considering the conditions, I'm surprised anything works in this movie. But, there is one thing that works: the gore.

Really, this movie brings the gore, even if everything else is terrible. Zombies snack on folks left and right. The makeup department was largely inspired by Dawn of the Dead's blue zombie craze, but many of these zombies have had a good bit of their faces eaten off. Unfortunately it's not consistent, so you get a mix of great-looking zombies next to folks who look constipated, but when they bite into folks, they take chunks out and then pull out the organs. Want to see an old woman zombie whose house cat has burrowed into her stomach? It's here! A child zombie eating some guy's intestines. Oh yeah! Gotta give these guys credit, they did a good job with this. It's just basically everywhere else that the movie fails.

I don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but for the past twenty years or so, artificial snow in movies is usually this:

It's cheap, light, white, and "melts" with a little moisture. Fake snow in film is a difficult thing to make look legit, but when it comes to economies of scale, you can not beat the appearance and cost effectiveness of instant potatoes for snow.

I hope REPO reads this if he plans on having a movie with a Winter scene.
And here I thought most people used flaked laundry detergent and boric acid, since potato flakes are known to attract bugs and studios are rarely cleaned thoroughly. Or you know, they use a special effects company that specializes in snow with very specific techniques like fireworks and specially made machines:

Or was that sarcasm?

Since you love z-grade horror films you should watch the film Marley's Revenge (if you can find it). One of my neighbors (and very good friends) appears in it, and he tells some great stories about its "troubled" production. (He's the guy in the blue shirt in the linked video.)

first he has to watch Eric's Revenge, AKA: Phantom Of The Mall. Paulie Shore's 'big break.'

Oh man, tell your buddy that I really want to track down a copy of his movie now. Also, give him a thumb's up for me.
