It doesn't matter what console you're playing, progressive scan is always going to look better than interlaced. If you don't care about image quality, then sure, you don't need the cable. But if you want the best image possible for Gamecube and GBA, then that's what you need. Especially GBA, seeing as you can get an almost equivalent component image of Gamecube games for much cheaper on a Wii anyway.
...Unless you have a European Gamecube, in which case RGB is probably a better option either way.
