So seeing enemy HP is thanks to the Sight Scope that Lucca has equipped. If you give it to someone else you can see HP without needing Lucca in your party. The game is well balanced enough that party selection is mostly preference on techs; there's only a bare handful of fights that can be more difficult based on the party you select. For the most part it's just adapting your tactics based on what abilities you have available.

Dang, Popo, you make me glad I haven't yet bought Septerra Core on GOG.

Yeah I have owned Septerra Core since its release on PC and I absolutely agree with you Popo. I don't see the appeal at all. I played the demo on an old-school demo cd and didn't like it and my oldest brother saw me playing that and bought it for me, thinking I wanted it. Nope! Played a bunch of it and just couldn't stand it.

Go play something better like Anachronox.

I shall not admit defeat.

Another fun thing is that you can tell there are two classes of voice actors in this game. The main characters have decent voice actors (with one exception so far, who happens to be a party member) but all the other NPCs (who are all voiced) are clearly done by bored yahoos off the street.

The sad thing is there are some interesting ideas in Septerra core. The nature of the world is interesting and allows for a lot of varied environments and civilizations. The spell system looks interesting; I've looked at a list of spell cards and how they can combine for new spells and that's intriguing. The NPC conversations let you ask about specific topics and even have a conversation with each member of your party, injecting some WRPG style dialog trees into things. It's just the combat is so awful and I've been disincentivized from talking to all the NPCs because it's so slow and the VA is so generic.

Guess who's back and playing Septerra Core again? Some more adventure gaming rears its head and it's clear why you shouldn't mix RPGs with adventure games. Here's the sequence I just went through:

1. Start
2. Go through mountain pass (encounters), get key item in camp
3. Go to lake, use key item to pass, go through lake (encounters)
4. Get key item from graveyard past lake
5. Go back through lake (encounters)
6. Go back through mountain pass (encounters)
7. Head to some other area to turn graveyard key item into a new key item
8. Go through mountain pass again (encounters)
9. Go through forest (encounters). Get new key item
10. Exit forest (encounters)
11. Go back through mountain pass (encounters)
12. Get new party member using latest key item
13. Go back through mountain pass AGAIN (encounters)
14. Go through forest again (encounters) to previously blocked off area that new party member can get through
15. Finish

Very standard progression for an adventure game, but made intensely irritating thanks to all the combats strewn about.

With Shadowgrounds out of the way, I'm finally getting around to Shadowrun Returns. As I said earlier in the "Playing" thread, I'm running a Dwarf Street Samurai named Meat. I finally have gotten to the point where I can pick a team, so for backup I have a Shaman, Mage, and Decker.

Right now I'm sitting pretty in an NTSB facility down by the docks which is overrun by a rival team of Shadowrunners. I slaughtered the ones outside the warehouse easy enough and now have to kick the asses of the ones inside. I did the battle once before but had to get up and go in the middle of it, and my Mage had been knocked down anyway. I like the guy; he's an elf covered in a massive tattoo of his skeleton. Once I finish mopping up, I'll have my Shaman contact her dead brother, and we should be golden.

So far I am having a blast with the game, though I don't like that I seem to have to click on things a few times before my character will finally interact with them. That got annoying fast. And the linearity makes me feel like I am being railroaded in one direction. There is also a lot about the game that I am only beginning to understand, like magic. And so far, hacking has only played a minor role. This being Shadowrun, I worry that I'm going to get screwed at some point late game because I suddenly have to be able to hack.

So, for the couple of us who have beaten this, how far am I?

y'know I thought I was gonna love Shadowrun Returns but I just couldn't seem to get into it. I love that style of combat. I dig the sci-fi setting. So I'm not sure what it was.

I am very glad I don't have that issue, as I'm having an absolute blast. It all just seems to click, save for the couple of issues I mentioned in that last post. I wish there were more games with this kind of setting for me to explore. I really love cyberpunk.

Which one? The 1985 game for Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum or the 1997 point-and-click adventure?

Eh, doesn't matter, I haven't gotten to play either unfortunately. And supposedly the source code is lost for the 1997 one, so the possibility of it getting a re-release is currently nil.
