I'm just thinking of how neat it is to have a DS and play GB, GBC, GBA, and DS games all on it--even if it's your first system you can still get the classics!; or PS1, PS2, and PS3!; Xbox and Xbox 360!
We already had a topic on this. A backwards compatible Dreamcast would've been more costly. The Saturn was hard to program for and had an awkward console configuration (like two processors in a console). The endeavor wouldn't have been worth it.Beak wrote:A damn shame that Sega didn't make Dreamcast Saturn-compatible. It would have added so much value to the system.
The console would be bigger and thicker if it had the GBC hardware in it, and that would've defeated the purpose of a portable game console.I'm just thinking of how neat it is to have a DS and play GB, GBC, GBA, and DS games all on it
The 20 and 60GB PS3s have PS2 hardware in them. The 80GB PS3 uses PS2 emulation (with varying results). THe only PS3 that can't play PS2 games at all is the 40GB. The Xbox 360 uses emulation and supposably has great compatibility.PS1, PS2, and PS3!; Xbox and Xbox 360!

Cost-cutting measure, then?marurun wrote:Actually, retro-fitting Gameboy/Gameboy Color capabilities into the DS would likely not have been a big problem, as the circuitry is fairly small.

If I remember correctly it was because the particular chip that the GB used for audio was becoming more and more expensive to acquire. So that's why Nintendo dropped it, hence the Nintendo handhelds after and including the Game Boy Micro not including BC with Game Boy or Game Boy Color games.GSZX1337 wrote:Cost-cutting measure, then?marurun wrote:Actually, retro-fitting Gameboy/Gameboy Color capabilities into the DS would likely not have been a big problem, as the circuitry is fairly small.

I don't think most people would care if it's a full-sized console since the previous console could just be placed somewhere else on the entertainment centre. Most people would more likely care about BC for a portable console since most people don't want to carry more than one portable console.Niode wrote:Backwards compatibility doesn't really make much difference to me since I have many consoles and am able to play the games on their original format. It's nice sometimes but it's not necessary.GSZX1337 wrote:Cost-cutting measure, then?marurun wrote:Actually, retro-fitting Gameboy/Gameboy Color capabilities into the DS would likely not have been a big problem, as the circuitry is fairly small.
