Podcast #71 - Remastered

Post by dsheinem »

http://www.racketboy.com/podcast/racket ... remastered

After an apology to the listeners for the wait, Dave and John discuss recent gaming acquisitions and what they are currently playing. The discussion then turns to HD Remasters, recent retro news, gaming with friends, and perfectionist play-styles. They finish up answering listener questions and feedback. Enjoy.

I thought this was literally going to be an old podcast with "remastered" audio.

Re: your answer to my question-
Yeah, I forgot about pay-to-win type monetization. Although that method is more prevelant in mobile games at this point. I haven't seen it in any of my home console games but you made a brief reference to fighting games. Any specific title you know of that features pay-to-win mechanics?

Hd remakes discussion-
KOTOR on mobile is really good. It's basically a port of the PC version but updated for retina displays. Runs great.

DQ8. I think John mentioned this. It's kind of a strange coincidence because I've been playing this game and I listened to the podcast while I was leveling up my characters. I didn't expect it to come up during the discussion. I too would like an Hd remake of DQ8 because there's occasional slowdown and screen tearing... It's like the PS2 can barely handle it.

Interesting discussion on homebrew vs indie. To blur the lines further Hasbro released Jaguar development rights to the public in '98 making it the first open platform to my knowledge. Telegames released Worms later that year. Telegames was a smaller studio. Doesn't differ much from the 2014 Another World Jag release... these could be retail, indie, or homebrew lol. Jag community is a weird example here.

Thanks for answering my story question. Good to see you guys had some difficulty with non RPG stories as well.

Edit: spelling & should mention: JTS & Atari "merged" then JTS sold the Jaguar rights to Hasbro. If you wondering what the heck Hasbro had to do w/anything...

I had an idea for another guest you might try to get on your show.

I don't know if the person would be willing, but it might be a good idea to try and get Graham McAllister (or one of the other team members) of Player Research on. It's a start-up company in Brighton UK that specialises in user experience testing games - it's less about 'does this work mechanically' and more about 'does this work as an experience'. An interesting angle perhaps?

Both the company and the man himself are on Twitter.

I listened to the first 40 mins or so on my commute the other day, but didn't hear this part. I'll have to try to remember to jump ahead.

That is an interesting perspective

Yeah it was a good one. Get into the "homebrew" DC scene that could actually be considered indie or late retail lol.

I do the same, DL & throw a few podcast on my phone for the commute.
