I'm sorry but Yoshi's Island is in NO way an escort mission. Quite the contrary, the game's baby Mario mechanic streamlines the health bar aspect of platformers pretty well.

You want an annoying escort mission? Try that Earthworm Jim stage with the fucking mad dog.

Ah no, I didn't mean Tails at all.

It was more of an obscure reference to Sonic and the rings you collect.
Sonic won't die as long as you are 'escorting' at least 1 ring around.
Yoshi doesn't die unless Mario is collected.

You don't need a ring to pass any level in Sonic, but he does have the tendency to run into enemies and fall upon spikes and numerous other doo-dads. It's more implied that you have 1.

Fun with semantics.
