oXbox Proprietary TV AV Output (VPORT)

Post by Jagosaurus »

I ran across a CRT online once & it had an interesting video input listed. Looked it up & it was a specific av hook up from the oXbox to that only CRT manufacturer. Looked up the cable & saw them available of ebay, etc.

I can't remember that name of the cable or the TV manufacturer. Any help?

Got a picture, or idea of what the cable looked like?

Found it! VPORT cable. Came on some RCA CRT TVs labeled as "Xbox Ready."

On my mobile @ work. More to come. Also found a reddit thread on it.

IGN article says it's a component signal carried over a single cable to TV.

One of the model #s here:
So there's no misunderstanding, the 27V550T is not a high definition, or high definition ready, TV. However, contrary to what your buddy might tell you, component output is not only for high definition output. The jump from S-video to component is not as dramatic as the jump from composite to S-video, but it is perceivable. And on the 27V550T, the image through the VPORT looked excellent.

Interesting cable & TV I've never seen discussed. Randomly ran across it.

I know CRT is about to research & provide more info :)

Huh. How completely unnecessary

I mean, it frees up component on your TV, but it had to have cost someone (RCA or MS) something to really push this standard.

I was thinking the same. I'm wondering if it's just a modified display port?

I can see the ease of the single cable connection, but since not a video standard adopted by ALL the TV manufacturers it fell by the wayside. Too bad, would have been simpler during the Component/Audio Cable octopus hookup of the day.

What engineer came up with the dumb idea to make one of the Component leads red just like analog audio right channel anyways?! I have a short handled heavy engineering hammer that needs to smacked over that idiot!

The one cable connection standard finally arrived though, now every console and system utilizes HDMI.

Thanks for the info, now we all know what that obscure VPort (if ever spotted on RCA Flat CRTs) is all about! Not sure if any of the RCA VPort Tube TVs supported 480p with that custom Component hookup. Many SD Tubes have a Component input for just 480i; would need to be an HD CRT to do get the progressive mode and higher resolutions.

The VPort appears to be the U.S. version of the PAL RGB Scart port, but instead with Component and Analog Audio in the VPort connection.

Cool TV to complete the XBox collection! 32" tube, maybe some were HD CRTS? :?

@CRT, figured this would find its way into one of your guides :)

I'm assuming 480i. I have a RCA TruFlat from this era, Christmas 2005 IIRC, & it's 480i over component. While not 480p, it's a HUGE leap from composite. My PS2 games look great. It's handles the 240i PSX games over component as well.

I also have a 27" JVC standard tube from around 2005 as well. 480i over component also. I've yet to find an EDTV.

@Joe, True, I'd be interested to see who did fork up the cash, RCA or MS.

If any1 knows more about this, let us know.

The breakout option for optical audio is pretty sweet.

Just when I thought I had seen it all... Jago brings up a TV with a special port just for one single console. Wow.

I, personally, would definitely use VPORT for my Xbox if I had a TV that supported it, just to free up a component port for another system if nothing else.
