PS2 Slim Remote

Post by Jagosaurus »

Hey guys. I'm looking for a remote for my PS2 Slim. I know the slim has IR receiver built into it. I want the remote to have an on/off button (not a reset only). I realize this is really "standby" mode but it boots down the console in my eyes :). I also do not want to plug a separate receiver in controller port. A few questions:

- Can I buy a remote with receiver & simply not need to plug it in due to built in IR (doubt it)?
- Can some point me in the direction of the OEM Sony remote that do this for me (know if he power button was added to later remotes)
- Any third party suggestions?

As lazy as it sounds, I have wireless PS2 controller & it'd be nice to be able switch TV AV on my TV remote, boot the PS2 with remote I'm hunting, & flip on the wireless controller. Almost brings the console into modern day :)

If I understand what you're asking for, any SONY remote or universal remote should do the trick.

Edit:
To elaborate on my brief response, most slim PS2s (that I have looked at) have an infrared port built in. You will not need a separate infrared controller port. All you need is the remote. Sony released remotes specifically for the PS2. You may purchase one of these, but you may also have other options. Most infrared remote codes are standardized along brand lines. I speculate that any SONY brand DVD remote should work; furthermore, I speculate that you should be able to program a universal remote to function nearly as well as a namebrand remote.

Edit again: a cursory google search shows that the original PS2 remote doesn't have a power button, just reset. Now I see what you mean. Just get a SONY brand DVD remote.

It may or may not be that simple. I'd google and see who makes a remote that'll do Sony PS2 slim specifically as it's not a tv, not a dvd, not a blu ray or vcr, so the remote maybe too dumb to pick it up. I've seen that happen. I've got a toshiba blu-ray that seems too dumb to pick up on a pair of universal remotes I have using any toshiba code.

Found my answer. I need this model remote:
SCPH-10420

...The earlier models of PS2 consoles and remotes did not have the ability to do power on/off at all, but following the PS2 redesign, Sony did indeed release a new model of remote as well. The SCPH-10420 is only compatible with PS2 models which contain a built-in Infrared (IR) Receiver and pre-installed drivers for the DVD Remote Control, but that would include most recent models. The SCPH-10420 apparently has both a Power/Reset button and an Eject button, neither of which were previously available on the Sony DVD remote, nor supported by earlier PS2 consoles.

Hold the reset button down and it powers off.
