So a buddy of mine gave me his old PS3 with a nonworking blue-ray drive. I thought I would use it to download all of the games I bought on PSN and put it in my kids' room.
So I factory reset it and tried to connect it to my WiFi... it didn't work. My PS3 is connected just fine, it's just this one.
If I let it scan for my WiFi it finds it and after I enter my password it says it can not get an IP address.
So, I put in the IP, Gateway, Subnet mask, DNS manually and it connects... but only for couple minutes. After a couple of minutes, I get a DNS 8071012 error.
I tried everything I could find from google, like using google's DNS and turning off the media servers and such, but no matter what I try I can't figure this out. I'm not sure why if I try to scan and find the wifi I can't connect, but if I enter it manually it connects for a couple of minutes.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks
*EDIT - Thanks for all the help with the WiFi, now I'm trying to fix the Blu-Ray drive.

Re: PS3 WiFi Problem
Replaced my wifi board a few years back after I bought one at a yard sell that didnt connect. Was the 60g phat. Easy to do and cheap. Fixed my issue anyway.
Re: PS3 WiFi Problem
Are you on the latest firmware? If not, I'd give that a shot first. You can download the latest PS3 firmware to a USB drive and install it. If a software update doesn't fix it, the the wifi board is probably busted like stickem said.
Alternatively, if your downloadable games don't require an internet connection to play, you could connect the PS3 to ethernet temporarily to download them.

Re: PS3 WiFi Problem
Try to statically assign the LAN IP of the PS3 in your router (likely will have to key in MAC). Might be an IP conflict or DHCP issue. I'd ensure it isn't internal network related first. You may still then have to make DNS edits.

Ok, this sounds like a good start. I'll try this before looking at hardware since a new drive and wifi world cost almost the same as a used system.
So... How do I "statically assign the LAN IP of the PS3 in your router"?

Re: PS3 WiFi Problem
Ok with the advise to set up on my router, I realised that all I had to do was change the last number of the PS3 IP address to something ridiculous - I used 240. Now it's working... Riddle now at least.
Thanks for the help.

Re: PS3 WiFi Problem
Sweet. My 360 is really picky if not statically assigned. Your PS3 was likely grabbing... trying to obtain... an IP already leased to another device.

Re: PS3 Blu Ray Issue (formerly a WiFi Problem)
Ok, so now that that is taken care of. Time to move on to the Blu-Ray.
The PS3 does not read discs... until I read online that it has a different laser for DVD and Blu-Ray. I tried a DVD and it works so that makes me think that the issue is not with the drive just the Blu-Ray laser.
I did notice that if I insert and eject a disc a ton of times (not consistent at all and a minimum of 8 tries) that the game will read and load.
I plan on trying a lens cleaning disc today when it arrives from Amazon. Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!

Mod it, play ISOs off internal PS3 HDD

Can I do that and still play online? My kid loves Destiny, including the first one on PS3.
