MAME ARCADE - Fixed (Updated)

Post by SpaceBooger »

So my Mame arcade stopped working... moving crazy slow and I deduced it was a HD issue. (when backing it up with a SATA to USB cord it was crazy slow and making weird noises)
It was running a Phenom 4 with a Geforce GTX 560 and 4GB DDR2 ram. It ran great for MAME and even Street Fighter IV.
When the HD went bad I bought a new one and installed it and I decided to use my old AMD FX 6100 and it's motherboard and do a complete overhaul complete with 8GB DDR3 ram.
I installed Windows 10 and reactivated it.. and then is froze - the cursor and even the NUM LOCK and Caps Lock wouldn't work. And the computer freezes (HD light stops running and keeps freezing at different points - sometimes during boot, windows login, and sometimes after windows loads to the desktop)

Here is what I tried so far, all not working:
resetting the bios
upgrading the CPU cooler to a Coolmaster Hyper T2
a new power supply
using a different video card
tried one RAM at a time in different slots

When that didn't work, I went back to the original MB and the Phenom. It froze then too. I tried the above steps with the Phenom as well and it still freezes.
No matter what I do the computer freezes during boot or at the desktop.

Any suggestions?
I want to emulate MAME so I am willing to replace the PC with a Raspberry PI if that would work (assuming it would work with my HOT ROD arcade stick which is mapped to the default MAME keyboard settings)

Re: MAME ARCADE - Help (old PC freezing - may try oXBOX)

Post by SpaceBooger »

So I am thinking about scraping the PC idea and replacing it with my modded oXBOX.
The monitor will take the oXBOX via component or VGA and I have CoinOps6 complete installed so that should work as a frontend. My main issue is that I have an HanHo HotRod arcade stick that is hardwired to use the default MAME keyboard controls.Image

So I took a chance and bought a XBox Smartjoy Frag FPS Keyboard Mouse adapter and am hoping I can remap the controls through CoinOps to match the HotRod instead of the default joystick input. For $9 I figured it was worth a try. If it doesn't work, Ill continue to try working on the PC again even though as stated in the first post I am fresh out of ideas.

Anyone try anything like this with an oXBOX? Any ideas or suggestions?

I never did install CoinOps on oXbox mod box. I'd be interested in trying with you if you have done so yet. IIRC CoinOps had a recent release in 2016.

I remember hearing how huge the DL file was but perhaps that was just by 2006 standards :P

Let me know how the adapter works! I'll be using stock controller but would consider that.

A PC is the best option for Mame, so many more games supported and the versatilty of front ends. Just using the regular Mame front end search by genre, year, controller, etc alone makes the PC version a standout. Hopefully you figure out what the problem is, perhaps revert back to Windows 7?

For the game console; the SmartJoy Frag should work with any older PS/2 keyboard and mouse output. I have both the PS2 and Xbox versions of the adapter. Not only for Mame, but many of the console games work with a wide assortment of PC keyboards, mice and trakballs.

CRT, I read your guide and that motivated me to try the SmartJoy Frag.
I would rather use a PC, I have had 2 different PCs in there since 2008, and using MaximusArcade as my frontend but right now it's about saving some money and using what I have.
It's good to know that the adapter should work, I will miss playing the newer steam games on it though - especially SFIV.

I tried one more time to fix the PC and I pulled it off. I also redesigned the Maximus Arcade frontend skin.

So after replacing the Motherboard, CPU, HD and ruling out RAM and Video Card the computer still would freeze and make an annoying sound when playing newer graphic intensive games. (MAME was fine but Need For Speed Hot Pursuit would kill it). I tried everything and couldn't figure it out. After some research, I turned my CPU maximum usage setting in the advanced power menu down from 100% to 99%. Since then, three weeks later, there is no problem.

I never realized that 1% of CPU usage would cause so many problems. Now I wonder if I really needed to replace all of the components I did.
