NES RPGs

Post by racketboy »

Quick question... how many RPGs are there on the NES that are above average?
Any favorites out there?

I like star tropics. But I guess that's more of a action rpg. there is always dragon quest and ff too.

The Shin Megami Tensei fans will probably want both Digital Devil games on there. And there's the first four Dragon Warriors...

Most of the ones i condider good are action/rpg's like Zelda. Crystalis is great, as is the original Final Fantasy (duh). Im not a huge fan, but the Dragon Warrior/Quest games are well done. I think most of the other good ones never made it to the states...and playing rpg's without out being able to read the text is not good IMO.

As long as there's arabic numerals, you should be able to tell if you should equip the +1 mace or the +3 axe. ;)

I'd like to second the recommendation for Crystalis. But yeah, aside from that, the only ones I really enjoyed were Final Fantasy and the Dragon Warriors.

I can tell you that I hate King's Bounty and Hylide. yuck.

What about Willow? That is a solid action/sorta rpg. I wish i could think of more actual rpg's but...i can't!

There are some pretty good RPGs on the NES:

Dragon Warrior 1-4 range from being solid to being very good. There are better remakes available for 1-3 on the GBC and SNES, but DW4 is still very fun and very playable. Hope you don't mind grinding for levels and equipment, because it's pretty necessary in these games.

Final Fantasy 1 is pretty solid. It can be extremely frustrating with the lack of modern RPG features. The lack of some basic RPG features really make the NES version hard for me to play. Party members not switching to the next enemy after one is killed and just wasting attacks, not knowing who can equip what weapons/armor from a store and if it is stronger/weaker than what you currently have, etc etc... I wouldn't waste my time on messing with this unless you play FF:Origins for the PS1.

Final Fantasy 3 is a good game. Never played the remake of this one, but the original is still a fun game and has an English translation out for it. Definitely makes up for the mess of a game FF2 turned out to be.

Destiny of An Emperor is an incredibly under the radar game, that I found incredibly fun back in the day. It's based on the whole Romance of the Three Kingdoms story, so if you like that story line, you'll probably love this game. They also put out a sequel, Destiny of an Emperor 2, which has been translated into English, but I've gotten around to play that.

There are the best of the traditional style RPGs that I've played on the NES, but there are a lot of action RPGs worth checking out, all of which smash the two Zelda games into the ground IMO:

Crystalis - Amazing game; just replayed the remake for the GBC just a couple months back
Star Tropics 1+2 - Definitely enjoyed the first one a whole lot more than the second; Probably the only RPG that has ever had a yo-yo as the main weapon
Willow - Amazing game that almost no one I know has ever played before; probably the deepest of the action rpgs on the NES
Magic of Scheherazade - loved this one when I was a kid; best Arabian theme game I've ever played (most likely the only one too)

Here are some other games that I haven't played all the way through and can't totally recommend, but seem like that would be worthwhile:

Wizardry 1-3: Extreme dungeon crawlers based on D&D type system. Really popular series that spawned 8 games in the main series and numerous other off-springs on platforms ranging from the PC to the PS2. These early games are pretty hardcore though; there is only one town and one fricking huge dungeon you work your way through via first person. I quit playing the first Wizardry after two of my characters had their alignments switched to evil and I couldn't use them in my good-aligned party anymore; this same shit happens in Wizardry 5, so I'm assuming all the early Wizardry games are that brutal.

Ultima Exodus (3), Ultima: Quest of the Avatar (4) and Ultima: Warriors of Destiny (5): Console ports of the pretty much legendary PC game series. Never really played much of these games on the NES, but I've played through almost all of the series on the PC, and I can say that the entire series is pretty much ground breaking. They used a lot of RPG elements/concepts well before any of the other mainstream series adopted them, and some of the morality theme stuffed that they use, has really never been used all that much since. These ports are probably much more accessible than playing the original games as they require a system with DOS, using DOS-BOX or downloading game engines people have made so that some of the ultima games can be played in Windows.

Just Breed: A strategy-rpg made by Enix. Never got pushed out into the US, but has since had a english translation released. I think that makes this the only SRPG available in English on the NES.
