I'm tired of being bashed for being a retro-gamer, i debate and shut must of them up myself but once in a while you get a total asshole.

Here is a line one person said recently to me

"so much new technolagy"
"y go back to old stuff LOL"

What are some debating points i can use that will shut these idiots up?

I hate being the 15 year old retro-gamer sometimes. I get picked on for it, I started gaming at an age of 2 1/2. As a result i still got to experiance the cd era and so on.

The only real gamer is one who plays everything IMO. My favorite "retro" games defy gameplay genre and were never really revived. Games like Nights and Rez have never really been updated gameplay wize. There is good reason these games are being re-released (PS2 and xbox live) with only graphical updates on current consoles.

Tell them games are fun, and if you are having fun playing those games you don't give a damn what they think.

First, pose the question "How can you see how gaming has evolved if you haven't played the classics?"

Second, "Your Xbox 360 game cost you $60 bucks. My SNES game cost me $5."

Third, "I'm trying to get to know [enter genre here] games better, so I'm trying some of the older stuff."

Four, "You're just mad that I can beat you in Street Fighter 2: Turbo."

Ok, don't try four, even if it is true.

You could also bring up how easy it is to import older titles, so you can play games they've never heard of. There's the mod community too, where you can discuss all the things you're learning about making and modifying consoles. There's collector purposes.

And then there's the reason that most of them don't want to admit. "Maybe I just like being able to sit down for five minutes with a quick game of Super R-Type."

Either way, be polite, and keep a stiff upper lip. You probably already know more about games in general than your friends do, but eventually they'll realize how much more you do know, and they'll start asking. Plus, in the end...a game's a game. What does it matter how old it is?

That's all you need. There's no realistic answer they can give to refute that query.

If they do try to be smart-alexs and attempt to refute it, you can feel free to end the discussion there.

I agree with the comments so far. A game is a game, what does it matter how old it is?

By these newer is better logics this means that Chuck Palahniuk is 100 times greater then Kafka just because Palahniuk is alive and writing right now. And both of them are great writers.

Sorry I'll take Gunstar Heroes any day over Halo3. Just like I'll take James Joyce's short stories any day over Stephen King.

Just grunt like a caveman and hit them with a club.

That's what we retro gamers do, right?

People often criticize old games without giving them a chance. My friends and I play games round each others' houses quite often. When we're at mine, sometimes I like to bust out some old games and make them play them. Most of the time they really enjoy the games, especially classics like Bomberman, Streets of Rage and Street Fighter 2.

It's ridiculous to say something is bad or stupid without looking into it first. I'd call them on it. If they think the games are so bad, invite them to play some of yours and see whether they feel the same afterwards. These people are just ignorant. They need to be helped, not feared. They should realise what they're missing. Emulation is a good way to introduce people to retro games without any risk.

It's not like humanity has evolved a step in the past 20 years. A game is there for entertainment. If people could enjoy it 10 or 20 years ago, then people can enjoy it now. Just because the graphics might not be quite as good it doesn't mean it isn't fun to play, and fun is what really matters.

Hell, people still love the original Star Wars trilogy 30 years on and movie effects have come a really long way. I mean the effects in the new trilogy are faaar better, but it doesn't make them better movies.

I don't bother trying to convert people to older games. I get them to try something a little different and most people enjoy it without any real coersion from me.

I get together with friends who would rather play halo, I simply pop out a copy of Marvel vs Capcom for the DC and they kinda see what I'm talking about. Converting people is not my aim. I just wanna play good games regardless of era. Tying to prove your point to people is a waste of time. Hear their opnion, decide if you agree and then disregard it if it's rubbish.

Just play what you wanna play, enjoy it and screw everyone else.

A piece of advice from one canuck to another:

I say leave them alone. Don't talk about games with them. If you like hanging out with them for other reasons, that's cool. I have friends that have never played games except the newest Madden, but they are still my friends. Don't beat yourself up trying to convert them or explain to them why older games are still good.

If you want to talk about old games, do what I do and post it in here. Outside of this forum, only one of my friends knows anything about my gaming.

You will never be exactly like the people around you. Being an individual can feel lonely, but it will actually make you a stronger person. Your real friends will recognize and respect your beliefs.

Even if you are a Leafs fan. :D

Yup -- I don't even bother with them. You probably won't change their mind.
They're playing games for different reasons.
