Suspiria

Post by Ack »

So I just watched Dario Argento's horror film Suspiria. I felt it was good, but...well, I really have mixed feelings on it. The lighting and cinematography were nothing short of superb, and for the late 70s, some of the visuals were really good. I love the use of the color red in the film. But the script, and some of the props...it hurt. It might have been partly because the version I was watching was completely dubbed. Apparently that's all Netflix has for it, DVD wise. Not even subtitles. Had to watch it on my computer, because my tv's speakers couldn't handle the drastic changes in volume. The music was incredible, though. Definitely some top notch material. Just that script that bogs it down for me...

Any of you other guys seen Suspiria? What did you think when you first watched it?

I loved it. I currently have the Anchor Bay version, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the Blue Underground DVD, which I hear is a lot better.

And to Juno McGuff, Wizard of Gore is NOT better than this. I like Herschell Gordon Lewis' work (his gore work, that is), but he's not technically a "master of horror". His stuff, like "Blood Feast" and "Two Thousand Maniacs!" is exploitation. Also, Juno, this is NOT a slasher film.

Also, a few other good Italian horror films I've seen before are Bay of Blood (which has DOZENS of alternate titles) by Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci's "Zombi 2" (though not really a sequel to the Argento cut of "Dawn of the Dead", known as "Zombi"; also, this film is known here in the states by it's American name, "Zombie"). Though one could probably recommend ANY Argento, Bava, or Fulci film.

Another gr8 one, albeit a little silly and nonsensical, is "Paganini Horror". It's about a rock band that finds an old manuscript of a lost work of Nicolo Paganini, a violin virtuoso who supposedly sold his soul to the Devil, a la Faust. But I love the so-bad-it's-good '80s rock in it, like the song played by the band at the beginning and their version of the Paganini song (which they called "Paganini Horror"), which is apparently a knockoff of ELO's "Twilight".
