I played through Ys III - Wanderers from Ys for the Sega Genesis. Pretty bland. I would not recommend it. Unfortunately that is the only one I have played, sorry I couldn't be more of a help.

I played the Ys I and II for the Turbo Duo in the olden days and it was excellentt for its time. I don't know about now as I am kinda spoiled by modern RPG.

I'm interested in this as well. Anyone played Ys für the Master System or Ys VI for the PS2? I'm considering to buy them someday, if they're good.

Y's has freaking great music and a pretty decent game (even for today) as well. Only play the TurboDuo versions as the others will likely play the same but w/o the music, I know that game wouldn't have made the impression on me that it did.

Ys III for the snes is so-so. I tried to like it after numerous recomendations, but i just hate the way it controls. Your weapon has no reach and the enemies don't recoil so there are tons of cheap shots. i've heard it gets better, but....i haven't stuck with it. i've head book 1 and 2 on the Turbo are much more fun, and like someone else said the music and sound are great. they are more of an over head view from what I remember. Despite it's bland reviews I've wanted to play Ys: Ark of Nephitism for ps2 but haven't as of yet.

I can strongly recommend Ys 1+2 and Ys 4 (Ys 4 is a Japanese only release) for Turbo Duo and Ys 6 (make sure to put in the codes in the PS2 version to switch to the original voices and cut scenes, there is a code input in the game before you start, so you don't need to hack anything).
Ys 3 and 5 are pretty meh.
Despite it's bland reviews I've wanted to play Ys: Ark of Nephitism (sic) for ps2 but haven't as of yet.
For years now I have basically had to ignore "mainstream" reviews because "mainstream reviewers" are full of crap.
Half of the reviewers that claim to have some kind of street cred can be even worse.
The only option I found was to find a few people who write online who have decent taste and focus on their impressions of games (not necessarily reviews) and otherwise use reviews only very cautiously as sources of general info on games rather than opinions. Of course, bad reviews can contain completely bogus info about games so you have to be careful.

thats why i still want to play it. i pretty much negate what IGN or Gamespot have to say when they give GTA and God of War near perfect scores.

I will also recommend Y's 1&2 and 4 on Turbo. I hear rumor of a translation of 4 out there (there = internet). Playing Y's 1 on my newly purchased TG-CD at the time was totally worth the $300 I paid for it.
I've also messed with The Oath in Felghana and Origin on PC. Oath is a remake of III but top view as it should be. Both run very nice on getto-PC hooked to the TV and pad. Story isn't too hard to figure out, it is a action RPG so Japanese does not hinder too much.
