I am thinking about buying a Turbo Grafx system from a friend, but he doesn't have the ac adapter. Can I use a 3rd party one or do I need a NEC brand guy?

I remember my friend in high school lost his adapter and got a replacement at radioshack so I assume they can't be that special...

as far as i can remember, i think they came equipped with a history eraser button.

As long as the following are correct for the hardware you will be fine (you can find the specs for the system by searching for the hardware info online):

1. The plug fits into the console (had to say it) and the adapter is meant for the voltage where you live.
2. The output voltage is the same type (probably DC) and the same amount of volts.
3. The output current is the amount needed by the system or greater, it won't draw any more than it needs.
4. The polarity of the pins is correct for the hardware (outer ring vs. center pin; you may be able to get an adapter where it can be set either way by adjusting the tip that plugs into the console)

I think you can get one at Radio Shack but I'm not 100% on that because the one I bought was for a PC Engine Duo R which is a different animal.

Thanks for the details. I do know how ac adapters work.
I was just checking because someone told the Turbo needs the right plug or it can short out some capacitors on the board, but now that i think about it it was the rf adapter. Good info for anyone who isn't sure about ac adapters though!

I just got one with no ac adapter I just use a Sega Genesis ac adapter.Just used to test to see if it worked.

Unless it has the exact same specs as the TG16 adapter, you're feeding it too much power and that eventually won't be good for it.

Here are the power requirements for the Turbografx power supply:

TurboGrafx-16 -- 10.5V DC 730Ma Negative Tip
TurboGrafx-16 + CD Unit -- 11V DC 1.53A Negative Tip
