I played it for just 5 minutes or so yesterday and it looked good, but at least the first level is not "straight-forward", you don't just go up or forward, you can do both. Think of a large square, for example. You start off in a corner and the exit is in the opposite corner, which means that you have to go up and forward, making it hard to thoroughly explore the level, and I didn't like that because I always felt that there was something left behind, some hidden little corner that I didn't explore. I'll give it another try, though. Maybe the rest of the game is more linear (I certainly hope so).
EDIT: I'm playing it again and after all what I said before is not true. What happens is that the game indeed at first gives the sensation that the levels are like a big square, with as much height as width, but in fact what happens is that the levels are like in an horizontal loop. When you advance sideways what you see in front of you is not a new part of the level, but what you're leaving behind. The concept is the same as in the original Kid Icarus, but in that game the levels were static and the character moved, and in here it's the opposite, your character is always in the centre of the screen and it's the level that moves.

I played through the game to the first boss. So far, so good. The game feels a great deal easier than the original Kid Icarus. You can go back down now, which is nice. It's also a lot easier to get arrow upgrades from what I could see (I had the third level weapon before I entered the fortress), though it has gotten more difficult to win the special weapons. The controls feel a lot tighter, the graphics are pretty amazing for a Game Boy title, and the music is still good. Also, you can jump while aiming up, though you still can't do it while crouching. Some of the harder to kill enemies have been toned down, too, like the grim reapers wandering around the level. And because of the horizontal wrap-around that NebackadnezzaR mentioned, it feels like the game is a lot more open to exploration than it actually is. Honestly, this is a pretty good sequel, and quite solid for a Game Boy game. I really suggest everybody else who's finished Kid Icarus give this a shot.
