Wii 2 hardware...any clues?

Post by eastside »

Since Nintendo can't obviously use GC hardware anymore, is there any clues as to what Nintendo's next-generation console hardware will be like?

As in, has Intel or IBM debuted or hinted of any technology that would be Wii 2 candidates?

I'm sure Nintendo would go the low-cost, low-power route again.

Maybe the stuff that is going to Apple notebooks may be a clue?

Integrated CPU/GPU graphics solution?

Eh - why not? I can see them doing another upgrade of the current hardware so the successor can handle HD resolution graphics. Perhaps a larger capacity internal flash drive as well; 4 - 8 GB.

Not sure what they will do for the game format - stick with current DVDs or go with blu-ray or another alternative?

I was thinking since HD-DVD is dead as a movie format, I wonder if Nintendo (or even Microsoft) could pick it up to use on their next generation systems as the game media.

The Wii is only 1 year through it's 5 year life cycle. No one will know anything for a long time.

true, i find it funny people are flaming consoles that have been out for mabe a year. PS3 has no games 2 months into its lifespace compared to 2 years for 360. NO DUH. As for the wii2 i gather they will use an ATI GPU sollution with a single proccesor. Its to early to tell. PS3 hasnt even hit its mark for graphics yet so for all we know the Wii hasnt either and is capable of good graphics, we just arent far enough into it yet.

nintendo is making to much money on the wii to be worried about the wii 2.

for example there was supposed to be a new gameboy as the DS wasnt supposed to compete with the gameboy, but i read in a interview with some exec. that interest in making a new gameboy dropped because the DS was making great money so plans for a new gameboy dropped. i know this isnt exactally the perfect example, but the wii is in fact selling very well and we are only a year into it.

by the time wii 2 comes out, there may be some processors out that we never heard of that are still in development.

Three Gamecubes duct taped together would be my guess.

The basics of Wii 2 hardware will have to be defined by the close of 2009. It's not that far away.

Screw home consoles. Nintendo is going for the portable.
Atari 2600 (AV mod), NES, SNES (region switch for PAL), Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii (D2CKey), PSX (Stealth V), PS2 (independence exploit w/ 160 GB HDD), Goldstar 3DO, Philips CD-i, Dreamcast, Saturn (racketboy's chip), Sega Genesis 2 + CD2 + 32X + Power Base Converter, Game Gear.

Don't worry, there will never ever be a Wii 2. Trust me.

Nintendo has never used a number in naming their consoles.

However the successor to the Wii will, knowing Nintendo, be very understated in it's hardware capabilities while also being low on power consumption, just like every other console that Nintendo have ever done.

I wouldn't expect ultra-detailed graphics or anything as Nintendo have decided to shun that side of gaming. They have also stated no interest in media center functionality. So I think HD-DVD or Bluray will be out of the question. In my opinion they'll probably go for a proprietary format again due to the rampant piracy on the Wii. I would be happy with something 10-15GB on the size of the GC disks. Seems to be the sweet spot for storage right now, not too small but big enough for most games.

I'm more interested in seeing what the next Gameboy is going to be like though!
