Anyone else only collecting Japanese Retro?
I'm starting to make peace with the fact that at this point in time, Gamecube and PS2 are infact retro. Can't say that about XBOX because the XBOX is really the beginning of modern gaming.
But I digress. If I'm buying Retro games these days it's Japanese stuff. Not because I've gone full weeb, But 1. the games tend to be cheaper 2. There are alot of interesting stuff that never came out in the west.
I just bought a Japanese PS2 with a few shmups, some fighters and because it was cheap, Ridge Racer V. I also have a Super Famicom, I have an AVS and I'm concentrating on the Famicom end of that system. My US Saturn has seldom had a US game in it. My Dreamcast is Region Free as it bought it modded. My next big purchase will be a Japanese Gamecube as I understand the Freeloader disc works on everything.
So am I alone in this one or are there other people buying Japanese retro games exclusively?
It's not that US PS1 games aren't things I'm interested in though, becuase while I can speak and read some Japanese, I don't know enough to get through any RPGs even with a Kana book.

Re: Anyone else only collecting Japanese Retro?
Since I really started "collecting retro," around 2011, I have primarily bought Japanese versions of games. Not exclusively, but I would estimate that at least 65% of my collection is Japanese region stuff. Even for consoles, I often have a Japanese revision, and a North American revision, but it's almost always the Japanese one that I have set up. In general, since becoming proficient enough to play most anything in Japanese (maybe around 2008), I've just wanted to play anything that was written in Japanese in its original form. My game playing skews heavily toward games developed in Japan, so that typically means I buy, and play a lot of Japanese versions of things. I also usually prefer to have/play the North American version of Western developed games, though (although there have been some outliers, like Eternal Darkness, which was a bit cheaper for me to get the Japanese version of).

The next thing I'm getting is a Japanese Gamecube but I'll have to make sure I can use that HDMI thingy on it. My American gamecube works fine it's just it's AV out only and no matter how amazing the Framemiester is it can't really make the Gamecube looks perfect.
On PS2 I'm mostly getting arcade ports, Racing games, Shmups and the better Simple 2000 games.

Re: Anyone else only collecting Japanese Retro?
About 20% of my collection is Japanese, though the ratio is slowly shifting in the direction of more Japanese and less North American. By this time next year I anticipate I'll own more Famicom games than NES games, for instance (actually this already has happened, if you include my FDS games in the Fami total).
The vast majority of Japanese games in my collection were only released in Japan. In general, if a game was released in Japan and North America, I go for the North American version. I will make an exception for games that had a butchered localization (like Ranma 1/2: Chounai Gekitou Hen).
Also, I pay no mind to regions when it comes to the Neo Geo home consoles. I just go for whatever version is cheapest.
Lastly, there are game released on hardware that never made its way to North America -- WonderSwan, MSX, SG-1000, PC-FX...

The last time I was really collecting things it was Famicom and Super Famicom Japan exclusives. There's a lot to love and it's often cheap. Especially Famicom.

Famicom is so much fun to collect for, I need to get back on it. There's just something about 8-bit games you don't get with any other era at the same time, from 16 bit era onward you had amazing arcade ports. Japanese PS2 owners if they had a good stick basically owned their own arcade. I GUESS you could say the same for the Saturn and Dreamcast too.

Just saying, I'm selling a few Famicom and Super Famicom games if anyone wants to expand their Japanese collection...

Wait, what? Why? Because of the internal hdd and reliable online capabilities? The damn thing is almost 20 years old, it's nearly ready to go to a titty bar.Dikdikvandik wrote:I'm starting to make peace with the fact that at this point in time, Gamecube and PS2 are infact retro. Ostensibly by this logic, decades old PC's aren't retro either.

Re: Anyone else only collecting Japanese Retro?
I just got back from a Japan-vacation this past weekend and I definitely got a lot of Japanese retro games. I'm just starting to get into Mega Drive collecting, which has some cool exclusives and a few games that are less expensive than the American versions. I've also loved the world of Saturn imports for ages.
But I don't see myself ever focusing exclusively on Japanese retro. I still have a lot of nostalgia attached to the American releases and they're much easier to find for the most part.
