I use a small PC + RetroArch for most of my retro gaming these days. The best "most" system controller i have found is the Hori Pad Turbo Plus.

I use it for NES all the way up to WiiU. Mostly because the D-Pad does not suck for older games. Otherwise i would just use an official Sony controller.
These SN30 Pros look pretty neat... Anyone tried one?

I haven't tried that one, but can't recommend the Buffalo SNES controller enough! They run $14 on Amazon.
Thanks for the Hori pad. I've been looking for a reputable controller to use for PS1 emulation (games that aren't d pad friendly).

I have a SN30 Pro. It's good, but I don't like the d-pad on mine. It seems to slide around a bit too much, and it's far, far too easy to accidentally hit diagonals. My brother's doesn't seem to exhibit this issue, which indicates to me there's a little bit of manufacturing tolerance / quality control issues. I hear there's a fix that will reduce some of that by opening up the controller and putting tape over part of the contacts.
For stuff that doesn't require the d-pad much (i.e. Xenoblade 2), it has been fine. Analog sticks are nice and tight. The only adjustment is that it is a bit smaller than the normal controller, so if you have large hands and cramp easily, it might not be the best choice.

Thank you. I think i will stick with what i have.. and buy another. Maybe a couple more. They seem to be slowly disappearing, and getting more expensive, on eBay.

A friend of mine is having trouble using those for retropie. He has to remap it every time, couldn't get it to play it wireless. He has already followed the guidelines.
