Haha, well I don't know if it would make you feel much better but Super Derek did a great Hydlide defense review.Unfortunately I grew up with the game and had no idea how to play it. So my opinion is very bias.

Well that does make it sound a little better but yeah it does sound like a game if they were going to bring it over they should've spent the budget to do quite a few things like: retouching the mechanics a tad, maybe add some equipment doesn't look like you get any and it'd be a saving grace from the looks of it, add some towns to give hints and life to the surroundings, lengthen some of the music tracks so it's not as repetitive or at least had more variety anyways. I mean from what he was saying the game was already 5 years old when we got it and yeah really stupid of them not to retouch it for the sake of making it better when compared to Zelda and such.
Though one problem with his review though: zelda is not a ARPG, it's a action adventure there's no rpg elements really in the game beyond NPCs and equipment and that's really all it has going for it to be a rpg but it still doesn't count and even nintendo denies it's rpg nature and insists they're all Action Adventure games.

Haha!
I actually enjoy the game quite a bit. It's a nice old skanky computer ARPG (1984!). It hasn't aged well at all, but can still be knocked off in an afternoon.
I looking forward to playing Hydlide II real soon.

Hydlide is worth trying for most people who like retro games.
It's not a great game and probably deserves to be forgotten, but it's also not that bad. The NES was filled with games that were much worse. Just try to keep in mind that it was already an old game when first showing up on NES, and set your expectations in line accordingly.
When playing the game for the first time about 15 years ago, I thought it was interesting. There are flaws, but some neat ideas too. It's very short so the bad parts don't bog down the experience for long. In about an afternoon I was able to see almost everything the game had to offer - although I think that included looking something up online when I was stuck.
If I had paid full price for it back in the day it would likely have been disappointing - and the music in particular is annoying. But nobody should be paying more than a couple of dollars for the game now. Just put on a podcast or something and you'll be fine.
