I thought this was interesting:

“There were limitations and technological deficiencies to those old games,” Thompson said, “that we’ve now come to view as strengths.”

I'm all for games evolving, but sometimes I do love the simplicity of older games. I find that lately I'm bouncing between modern and retro games. Depends on my mood

Nice write up. I'm actually just getting back into retro games, many of which had no part of my youth.

Since the Sega Genesis onward, I had just about every video game system. I played Gradius for the NES at a friends house (four years ago) and was immediately hooked. As much as the games progress to more movie-like experiences, the challenge of most of them just isn't there.

Another thing I thought was semi-related and interesting was that new games inherently force you to sink serious time into them while I can turn Gradius on and instantly get into the action.

You don't know how true your statement is. This particular paper is not well known for the journalistic abilities. In the past I have routinely found spelling and grammatical errors on an almost daily basis not to mention their lack of actual reporting ability. Don't get me started! BUT, they are getting better recently, not sure why but it's a welcome thing.

That is a good newspaper write up. So many newspapers do really bad video game coverage. Even the NY Times has shoddy coverage most of the time.

Speaking of bad newspaper reporting. I was on vacation in Aruba this past week and the newspaper down there had an article come out on Thursday morning saying "Wednesday Night to Have Lunar Eclipse". Putting an article in the paper a day late was a very funny mistake.
