Together RPG - Shadowrun - 2/1-->4/1

Post by CFFJR »

Welcome chummers, to our next most excellent selection for Together RPG, Shadowrun!

Image

Shadowrun is a cyberpunk rpg based on the popular tabletop game of the same name, featuring a dystopian future, megacorps and epsionage, cybernetic implants, a worldwide hackable computer network known as the Matrix, the rebirth of magic and some fantasy races by way of human mutation.

There are three versions of the original Shadowrun, released on the Genesis, Snes, and Mega CD, and none of them have anything in common other than the name and the general setting of the world of Shadowrun. All three games have their fans, but the Genesis version is generally considered to be the most accurate experience when compared to the tabletop game.

Image

The Genesis version is a top down action rpg. You play as Joshua, trying to find out what happened to his brother, before getting sucked into a larger conflict.

You can select from three classes at the beginning, which affect your starting stats, but you can also hire fellow runners to join your party and pick up any slack.

There are three distinct legs that make up the overall story that can be approached in any order. They are connected by accepting and completing smaller missions that may involve something as simple as delivering a package or an escort, as complex as delving into the Matrix to steal files, or as dangerous as an assault on a megacorporation, not to mention some investigation of your own.

The game is rather open, so you have some freedom about how to achieve your goals.

The Snes version is also an action rpg, this time from an isometric perspective. You play as Jake Armitage, a recent amnesiac who barely survived a shot to the head, and the first big question is just who the hell wants you dead.

Combat is real time, but interactions are made with a cursor (you aim with a crosshair). This game also features a keyword system that will bank important terms that you can discuss with npcs.

Finally, the late in life Mega CD version was a Japan exclusive, developed by Compile. This is a bit of a hybrid, and you might consider it a cross between Snatcher and Shining Force. Combat takes place on a grid with a top down view, while all other interactions are in a first person visual novel style.

There are 5 different scenarios to complete. Unfortunately, the game is extremely text heavy and entirely in Japanese. There has been an English fan translation in the works, but there hasn't been an update on the project in nearly a year, and there is no playable version of it yet.

If anyone is able to play this version, please document your experience! I know I'd love to hear about it.

So that's Shadowrun! Join us, let us know which version you'll be playing, talk about your experience, and for god's sake don't get sent to the chop shop! Unless you want to.

I will definitely partake in this, the Snes is my version of choice. I've attempted many times before to break the ice but usually die pretty early and have to start again which usually delays me an few years into wanting to try again. Lol

But I'm feeling motivated this time around, and hate to rain on your parade but there is Shadowrun for the Xbox360 I'd like to add to the topic, unless that gets me kicked out then I'll just enjoy it silently.. But if you approve I'll share the experience through my lens :)

Edit: it's a FPS but let's lie and say it has RPG tones in a sense (shhh!)

Sure, feel free to discuss the 360 version!

That one's a first person shooter isn't it?

It is so I'll just tap into it slightly here, just so people can learn a little bout it while enjoying the others.

Down forget the badass PC games as well:

Shadowrun Returns
Shadowrun: Dragonfall

I've been meaning to get back into these after finding out that they upgraded the save system, which is what stifled my motivation to play these games before.

Yes, that's the FPS that had the crossplay between the 360 and the PC and demonstrated why KB+M is superior than dual analog for FPS's.

Fun fact; Jake Armitage has a cameo in Shadowrun Returns at the beginning of the game.

I've got the SNES version on my shelf; I think I might just bump FFX-2 from my current playing and pick this up instead, rather than waiting to finish X-2 and then this.

Yea KB+Mouse vs controller just doesn't seem fair, lol

I got into it during my research for MP games with AI Bots, and put enough effort to give it a shot which I enjoyed. So far I can say the AI is pretty good and the Shadowrun lore is all there just fused into the FPS package where I can see was a no no for the series but a really good game if your unbiased.

Great game, but I probably won't be joining in. I don't own a copy and have tons of other stuff in my backlog to get to.

I will be checking the thread to see what the rest of y'all say.

I'm probably in if I find the time. I'll probably emulate the Genesis version. I do have a Genesis but I don't currently have a TV to play it on. Might even stream it or at the least do a YouTube series. Maybe with some post commentary that goes into depth about the game. I'm trying to build a creative portfolio of sorts.

So, since it's okay to profess this. I really love the FPS game. REALLY love it. It was easily my most played FPS game for at least a year. It's not that good really. But it was a ton of fun for what it was. It wasn't a game to take terribly seriously. I liked the hybrid of Counter Strike style progression (build up money to buy things each round) and the various classes and gameplay that made it feel more like Team Fortress 2 does.
I'm still not sure whether I'm a kid or a squid now.
