xbox 360 hack?

Is is possible to soft mod 360 without buying chips or opening up the phat console? Found one for cheap without 360 hard drive unless its requirement or could I use my external usb drive. I just don't want to spend so much money at the moment, just want to use it for mini arcade games, emus, and some movie dvd. No I don't want an old heavier Xbox that takes up room space.
