Do You Dream Of Working In Game Industry?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Do You Dream Of Working In Game Industry?

Post by racketboy »

Do any of you have ambitions of working in the gaming industry?

If so, in what regard....?
Programmer?
Level Designer?
Artist?
Writer?
Sound Engineer?
Journalist?

I remember back in High School I used to think it would be the coolest to be a game programmer. Of course, back then I had a very limited knowledge of programming. As a computer science major in college, I quickly realized programming games would require more brainpower than I was up for.

When I started this site I thought I might want to eventually be a full-time game writer/journalist, but after almost 4 years of doing this, I've decided that what I'm doing now is the extent of my writing ambitions. I would easily grow tired of writing about games as a full-time job. I like balancing my current day job with this site. It's a nice balance. When I get tired of one, I can take comfort in the other.

I also love doing graphic design, but I don't have the serious skills to do anything impressive. After rounding up all the game artwork for my art posts, I realize I'm next to worthless in that arena. :)

Now that I think of it, I hope I'm not discouraging anyone with this post. Keep in mind, I'm a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type of guy. I'm sure many of you have more specific and focused strengths.

i designed a pretty lame platformer when i was in 6th grade using mario paint. i was naive enough to think making games was as simple as that! took a comp sci class in high school and totally gave up on anything video game related. for the past 2 years i have tossed around the idea of working on localization (japanese to western), and i'm still not ruling out that idea...

I used to want to be a Video Game journalist throughout High School. I take writing more serious now, and if my career were to involve video game critique I would be scared that my attempts at serious writing may not be taken seriously.

The other problem with that job is that you have to play the crappy versions of the games :)

I write alot of short stories. Sometimes I'll be doing something like working or going for a walk and an entire world will spring into my mind and I will quickly run home to write it down, I never share any of my writing with anybody but my closest friends. But there is quite alot of it.

So I would love to be involved in writing stories or developing concepts for games.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Yes, it does. I've heard many people say that.

If I were to get a job in the game industry, I'd probably go for journalist. Simply because the gaming industry today DESPERATELY needs good journalists or reviewers. 90% of them suck

I'm happy just being a gamer though. I don't see gaming as a career. It's just a hobby I enjoy. I wouldn't mind having my own gaming store though. Then I could be around games and gamers all day.
