FPS/Thrid Person Hidden Gems

Post by TheRev »

I Rebought Bulletstorm for PS3 after having the 360 version and I forgot how great it was. The Multiple Weapons, the Sense of Humor, the Leveling up, the Leash and how it factors into gameplay. Plus Steve Blum. Forwhatever reason it was the out of the Park hit it should have been even with the Gears of War 3 Beta that that 360 version shipped with.

I have Binary Domain, Wet and Syndicate on the way as well and I'll be picking up Vanquish after I beat some of those.

But now I'm looking at 3rd and First Person Shooters that nobody really bought simply for not being Call of Dookie or Halo. I doubt there's anything else quite as creative as Bulletstorm but I'm curious to see whatelse is out there.

Breakdown on the original Xbox is my go-to recommendation for this.

It's also one of the very few Japan developed FPS games that I can think of.

Sega's better than it has any business being Outrigger. I agree on Breakdown I owned 100s of XBOX games and sold off most of them. I never should have gotten rid of Breakdown. Very creative game.

What era of FPS gaming are you looking for? There's a big difference between Heretic and The Ball.

I would say overall. But personally since I don't have a laptop to play the likes of Blood and Shadow Warrior and the Old Duke Nukems on. So I'd go far back as PS1 FPSes of which there were a few. My main focus though is the Current Gen (PS3/360)

I know the Original XBOX has a swoth of great FPSes that nobody bought.

The first No One Lives Forever game came out on PS2, though I've only played it on PC. That might qualify since I'm not sure a lot of people actually bought it despite good press (on PC at least). It's definitely something different, if nothing else.

Supposedly the PC versions may be in the works for a rerelease after being in limbo for years - Kotaku's post about that has links to several other somewhat-recent posts on the series.

Hmm...console only, eh? I've tried to exclude big names, though some of these will be console ports of big names on PC. Also, I tend not to be a big fan of really tactical FPS unless I can play with a lot of people, so things like the Tom Clancy games or Delta Force games won't show up in my list.

Saturn/PS1/N64 era: Hexen, PowerSlave, Robotica, 007: The World Is Not Enough, Alien Trilogy, Doom 64, PO'ed, Disruptor, Jumping Flash series, Codename: Tenka, Hidden & Dangerous, Alien Resurrection

PS2/GC/Xbox/DC era: Red Faction, Black, No One Lives Forever, Project Snowblind, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Timesplitters series, Soldier of Fortune, Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force, Urban Chaos, XIII, Dead Man's Hand, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Darkwatch, Painkiller, Serious Sam, Star Wars: Republic Commando, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Outrigger

I really liked Redfaction and Redfaction 2. Redfaction had some awesome destructible environments and RF2 had a really good variety of interesting weapons/abilities.

Binary Domain is probably my favorite at the moment though glad to see you picked it up.

Another good FPS which got a little attention but never really blew up was Singularity.

Why not, lets toss some PC FPSes in there too. There will come a day I'll have a good gaming PC and finally master the Keyboard/Mouse.

I'll pick up Singularity eventually. It was Metal Jesus Rocks' 360 gems that got me on this FPS/3rd person kick. Ironically I bought them all for PS3. Singularity was one of his picks.

I liked XIII alot Cel shaded greatness but the cliffhanger ending that never got resolved is ehhhhhhhhhhhh.

Black was awesome and it was an XBOX Originals game I downloaded for 360 It still holds up and was a "next gen" game for what was then current gen just as the next gen of the time was coming out (make sense?)

I hear things from time to time about the Original XBOX's Brute Force it showed promise but never went anywhere as was the case with a TON of original XBOX games.

FPSes or 3rd person shooters aren't my favorite Genre, not my least favorite by any means but The focus is on the souless AAA games that come out year in and year out and alot of the good ones like Bulletstorm which I just LOVE go unnoticed. This is why I don't really play many FPSes.

Brute Force is best when played in coop when played alone it isn't very impressive.
