saturn being picky about CD-R

Post by SnowKitty »

i have a modded saturn that plays originals perfectly and loads backups but skips alot on some of the CDDA tracks on em. i used sony CDR and burned in nero at the lowest speed i could with good BIN+cue images. im thinking it could either be the brand of CDs im using or my burner that's causing this issue, my other unmodded saturn does the same on the burned game CDs usinf the swap trick and testing in the BIOS menu's CD player. i even tried adjusting the laser POT on the unmodded saturn and no dice. it's driving me nuts right now trying to figure out what's going on with this shit @.@ when i had my first saturn i burned to sony media used the same programs and it worked with the swap trick just fine although i did have a different burner back then. i think my CD burner is probably fucked up. im gonna try another brand of media later on today and see if it helps but if it doesn't then ill try getting another burner. can anyone help me out here?

Just because you have used Sony before, doesn't mean its the same media.
Sony, and others, just slap their names on media produced by a handful of manufacturers from Japan, China, and Taiwan.
A given brand like Sony may actually buy media from two or three manufacturers at a given time but label them as the same media for consumers.

Hope that makes sense....

You sure they still do? I'm not a Sony expert, but I'm wondering if now that CD-Rs are kinda on the back-burner (no pun intended), maybe they outsource it all now.

Anyway, I would still try a different media.

i checked the ATIP and it said the dye is infact made by sony. i tried some shitty compusa blanks and it does the same thing lol. ill try and get a spindle of verbatim today if i can get some cash fixing my dad's friend's PC (i spent 20$ right now on a dreamcast at a pawnshop)

All my saturn games are on Philips and I never had an issue with the system not reading. I don't think I have anything on Sony. Mostly Philips and HP cd-rs.

Yeah, I miss the days when my local Best Buy used to regularly stock those Fuji TY spindles and have the ridiculous sale prices/rebates on them :)

I have used some of the worst cd blanks in history.lol, from no name brands to sony, verbatim, the list goes on and on. This issue really has to do with the type of burner, speed and program used to burn. Trust me, i've wasted tons of disks.
some burner programs like diskjuggler and alcohol work almost flawless, I'm currently using a pioneer cd /dvd burner, which is by far the best burner i've used in a while, no buffer underruns and all that.. Just straight burning.I've used quite a few burners and always had problems. in my experience some of the images might have to be changed to bin/cue and then burned in that format for it to boot up. It has happened to me many times. especialy with dreamcast games and some sega saturn ones.
