GBA Backlight Mod Help!

I purchased an aftermarket screen and ribbon adapter (from the venerable Zerey) to mod my original GBA for a backlit screen.

I soldered the provided wire to the PU and the screen works perfectly! Here's the problem: the ribbon adapter is too thick for reassembly. It's about 1 mm thick, and this extra amount makes my motherboard unable to pop into position (shoulder buttons, speaker, etc). I've made sure that without the ribbon cable, the board fits in just fine.

I have scrapped and sanded the inside of the face plate so the screen can sit as shallowly as possible, but it's still just a little too thick.

What do?

Update:

I figured it out. While I had shaven a significant amount off of the front plate of the GBA shell, I needed to shave more. It was completely flat, but I needed to shave down all the corners, not just the ones with the raised tabs.

Now it fits well.

I may have to take apart my modded gba and try this, as when I put it back together I had the same issue, I just kept the screws kind of loose.
