Spyro the Dragon PS1 Trilogy

So I'm in the mood to play me some 3D platformer. Apparently the original PS1 games are highly acclaimed. What do you guys think? Does the series hold up? Also, were they that good when they first came out?

I kept hearing good things about Insomniac's next big series, Ratchet and Clank, but honestly I found it kind of boring and repetetive. Also it felt more like a shooter/beat em up, than it did platformer.

So if I end up trying this series, which of the 3 games do you guys think I should check out? I'm going go hazard a guess that the first one is a bit rough on the edge, cause that's what always happens with gaming trilogies (unless this one is different).

It's true, the first one is very simplistic, though I enjoyed it when I played it. Having gone through the three original Spyros (and a couple of the later ones), I would say you should stick to just those three in the series. Of all of them, I would say Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! is the best.

So is the series anything special? A lot of people are blinded by nostalgia when it comes to those PS1/N64 platformers. I know I used to think DK 64 was "fun"

Actually, I played through the first three around 2010/2011, and I thought they were wonderful. They're not too difficult and a lot of fun, the graphics have aged well, and the gameplay is relaxing save for a few frustrating sections. I'd say check them out.

ok. I'll see if I have enough money left over in my debit card to buy the second one on PSN

EDIT

Actually I did a forum search before I created this thread, and I was surprised to see no one had ever made a thread for this series. How so? I thought it was pretty popular.

Well, the first three are popular, but we usually talk about them individually. Talking about the series as a whole, however...well, there is a lot of crap after the initial trilogy. Stick to the first three. Trust me.

Do a forum search for Spyro the Dragon mate :P

(correction I just did one with only the word spyro and there are a few more threads. I'm out before the "we have a thread for this" post  )

Yes, the first 3 are awesome, and have held up extremely well due to all of them having excellent camera controls (thanks to the DualShock).

I personally thought 3 was the best but 1 would be my personal favorite simply because it's the one I put the most time into.

It should be noted that Stewart Copeland of The Police did the soundtrack for the games and all the music is generally excellent and really suits the magical feel of the world.

A few of my favorites:

I would suggest the first one actually as the second one starts off with/has mundane tasks littering the worlds (which ended up being awesome anyway, but its a lot "slower" than the first). The first game you can sort of glide along and enjoy the atmosphere. It's kind of a "relaxing" game like Ack said above. I'd say that's your best bet. Just expect the games to be REALLY simplistic; you bash and shoot fire at enemies and collect gems... that's pretty much it; but it's great fun. :D

The second in the series is however more of a "game" per say as it feels like a game as detail oriented with the character interactions and gameplay variety as say Banjo-Kazooie.

Turns out I had bought Spyro 2 with my American PSN account a couple of years ago but never bothered trying it out

Yeah the game seems to be fun, but not amazing. It was to its advantage that it came out on the PS1 and not N64 where it would have much more stiff competition.

The controls are fluent, but I just wish I could remap them so I can set the fire breathing attack to R1.

Also I looooove the animation for the characters. Specially Spyro's. It was very cute when he jumped in the water and he was swimming while sticking his neck out to avoid the water.

I will play a bit more today I think. I just played till I got to that castle main area.
