Walls. I hit the walls. And I die. I run into them. I ram them. I don't even notice they make my craft explode.

I'd agree to an extent. With Gradius I feel like most of the time I have to be right next to the floor or ceiling to get power-ups or to kill enemies. Invariably I move a slight bit too much and hit them and die. For some reason I feel cheated every time it happens. I don't feel the same way in games like Ikaruga, to me it feels as if they present the walls as an obstacle, not just a stupid way to die.
All that said. I'm godawful at Gradius for this very reason.

yes, I'll agree there are games that do it well. Ikaruga is one of them. Shikigami II is another.
Radiant Silvergun makes me ragequit something fierce though.

I will say that I don't like how some Gradius games are too sensitive, so that I barely tap it and slam into the walls. If it were a bit less so, I would rank them much higher. As they are, they are still tons of fun and figuring out how to not slam into walls is a challenge in and of itself.

Yup.
Also eff the walls in Gradius. Eff them harder than the hawks in Ninja Gaiden.

I'm just always careful about letting my speed get too high because I'm afraid of slamming into walls?
But yeah, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to beat Gradius I or II (the only ones I have).

Oh come on now. You people and your modern shmups without walls. BACK IN MY DAY, we had obstacles and we had to dodge bullets by avoiding them completely and not having some pixel-wide hitbox saving us!
So shmups that have walls nobody likes?
Good bye R-Type series, Gradius series, many other good ones too.
I will admit, 1941 Counter Attack had the right idea, by using those walls as a way for your plane to spin around and shoot and not get hurt.
Oh, and no walls in ExedExes, I think you all could handle that
