I'm thinking about getting another system(this summer) and was stuck between these two. Can you guys tell me reasons on which one is better? Thanks!
(If I was going to get a 2600 it would be the common 4 switch)
Atari 2600 or Dreamcast?
Re: Atari 2600 or Dreamcast?
Well, it depends on the type of games you like to play. Those are two completely different monsters. The 2600 has that Pre-NES feel of quick games to get high scores, where as the Dreamcast has a wide variety of more modern titles, as well as some classics.
Personally, I'd go with the Dreamcast. Not only can you find a lot of the existing games for super cheap, but newer independently developed games are still coming out. The system has a lot of charm and is very unique.
[I was going to write out a bunch more, but I just noticed I'm coming up to the end of my shift]
My vote goes to Dreamcast.

The. 7800 and ColecoVision can both play 2600 games, so instead of a 2600, you may consider getting one of them instead.
If you get a Dreamcast, check the number on the bottom. The launch ones, indicated by a zero in a triangle, and revision 1, can play burns, but revision 2 can't.
Which you will prefer depends on your tastes. Do you like retro arcade games and don't mind sub-par graphics? Or d you like modern arcade games?
Re: jinx: they are still making quality titles for the 2600, too, like Ladybug, Halo 2600....

Re: Atari 2600 or Dreamcast?
It all depends on what kind of games you're looking for. 2600 games are more arcade-y and you are more likely to get high scores, there aren't many games that you can actually beat. They're still fun though, if you love late 70's early 80's style arcade games, then go for the 2600.
The Dreamcast's games are obviously better looking, but besides that they have a lot of games that you can play for extended periods of time like Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Grandia 2 etc. The Dreamcast also has a lot of great arcade ports but they're ports of mid-90's arcade games.
I guess what i'm trying to say is that if you like games that you can pick-up and play but have to restart every time, go with the 2600.
If you like games that you can immerse yourself into and want to play them for a couple of months, go with the Dreamcast.

To put it really generally if your into retro arcade games Atari is awesome plus alot of the carts are really cheap.
I personally would go for the dreamcast.it has some amazing games plus I love the controller. Also unlike the Atari you can actually enjoy a story and modern graphics while you play

IMO the 2600 is best left to folks with a nostalgic attachment to it. I find the games too simple for my liking and would recommend going with the Dreamcast.

Being frank, there aren't too many Atari 2600 games worth playing these days since pixel perfect emulation of arcade games is found everywhere at a reduced price. You can buy a compilation disc to play Pitfall and Adventure if you are really into it.
The Dreamcast is a great and has one of the best libraries of all consoles, specially if you like quirky unique titles or solid arcade action.

Re: Atari 2600 or Dreamcast?
Personally I have both and really enjoy them, but personally I would pick the DC all day long. The reason being is if you didn't grow up with the 2600 then your going to feel like the games are a bit shallow and simple. The Dreamcast has a catalog of awesome games including the master pieces Capcom Released during the DC's lifespan (MVC1,2,Project justice, POWER STONE1,2, Plasma Sword, just to name a few)
But if your adament about buying a 2600, I can sell you my Sears Telegame (heavy sixer) with 40+ games for cheap.(just want to free up space for consoles I play.)

"Shmup" is far more elegant!
