Most pocket gamers I know also carry an iPod or other player around with them. This makes sense if you're playing Game Boy Color games, but they're usually using a 3DS or PSP, which also have playback capabilities. I don't like carrying around more than once device, and I don't even own a "normal" media player. My PSP and DSi sound great - my only complaint is they're too big to go running with.
Does anyone else use a handheld console as their main music player?

Yup.
I use my PSP as a music player.
I've never owned an apple music product.
I do have a cheapie 4gb mp3 player, but I use the PSP's storage more.
I just switch out songs when I get tired of them.

I was using a 30gb iPod Video with rockbox on it for a while, but after having things break on it a few too many times, I've kinda stopped using them.
Been using my PSP as my main portable media device since I got it. It works pretty well.

I don't really use it but I have an FM-radio that can plug into a Game Boy Color and I think it's totally badass, in a lame sort of way.
I also have a music cartridge for Game Boy that I'll sometimes listen to.
...THAT'S ABOUT IT.

Right here.
I went from CD player, straight to PSP when the slim 2000 model dropped in the US and its been my primary music player ever since. Truth be told I haven't used used any other form of portable music device (other than my current fone which I got last year). Even now, I seldom play games on PSP like I used to, but it still gets ample use as a music player.

I dont really carry around any devices besides my smart phone. I have an old ipod that I typically leave plugged into my car. I sometimes take it into the office with me. my handhelds rarely leave my house.

Nope. I use this bad boy right here, since I don't have a smartphone or an iPod (not that I really care enough to want either device at this point anyway):

However, as a birthday present next month, my dad's giving me money to put towards a DSi so I will be curious as to how the music player on that thing works.

I have almost 170GB of music. I still roll with the iPod classic(160GB capacity) for my listening in the car. Don't have many CDs. I buy music on vinyl for home listening. I pirate everything in MP3 encoded at 320KBS so it sounds good. Too cheap to buy a digital copy when I've already spent 15-35 dollars for a brand new record of the same damn music.
Re: Who uses handhelds as their music players?
Nah, I use portables for portable games and nothing else. My interest in the media extras these systems offer nowadays is pretty much nil.
I'm sure they work fine, but I just don't need them for that purpose. Portable systems are still just too bulky for me to use them for something like listening to music while I'm working.
As for what I do use, I used to have ipods from various generations. A few months back, once I got sick to death of ipod and itunes and apple and all related crapola, I decided I was going to buy a non apple straight mp3 player.
I was planning to get a Samsung Galaxy Player, when I remembered that smartphones work as mp3 players. Since I did not yet have a smartphone, I figured I'd go ahead and make the switch and use it as an mp3 player.
So I got a Samsung Galaxy Stellar and a 32gb micro sd card, and while I think its a nifty device for a lot of things, I use it primarily for my music. And since its my phone I'm not carrying anything extra.
