How are we supposed to collect games in the future?

Post by Toktogul »

After recent rumors about the PS4 and Xbox 3, I came to the conclusion that this might be the end of our hobby in the future. From what I've heard/read, you will have to connect to the internet if you wanna play games and there will be a code coming with it, that is a single utilisation, it can't be used with another PSN or Xbox live account, meaning that you couldn't buy used games anymore for those consoles

If it's true, then that means that we won't be able to collect those games in the future. So might this be the last generation of gaming where we can actually gather retro games?

what are your toughts?

There will still be stuff to collect. Retail sales are dwindling, but they are not going to go away entirely in this next gen if ever (could you imagine retailers not having video games in stock during the holiday season?!).

The most likely scenario is that there will be an increasing amount of games that are digital-only releases. So there will likely be a smaller percentage of games that make it to retail in the next cycle.

Also, there's lots of rumors about the used game capabilities of the next PS or Xbox - but nothing has been confirmed. So don't get too worried just yet.

Nah,
What I meant is that they will still sell the games in store, but those games will be one use only with a code to bind with your account. You can't sell it after that, because it will be a worthless cd, unplayable. So that means there won't be anymore physical games to be played in the next gen of gaming.

IF you want to collect, you have to buy all your games brand new, and no trade/lend possible with your friends... that kinda sucks

Bro have you even SEEN my Steam list? Look at all those icons.

The collecting in a traditional sense may be gone at some point which would be a bit sad. I don't see there ever being a problem acquiring games once the console is dead though. It's pretty easy to have a console modded to play backups you downloaded illicitly after a few years with most consoles.

PC gaming has been this way pretty much the last 4 years. It sucks but we're doing okay.

Try losing access to over 600 games. Do you really believe you own a permanent collection?

I will throw a fit if they do downloadable games only or empty cases with a piece of paper inside or a disc that only works with one console. I would go into a big rant but I dont think I have the energy. It's just really disheartening the big game companies can't just focus on delivering killer products instead of trying to squeeze every dollar out of each release.

This is exactly why physical media will always exist. If stores can only sell consoles, accessories and digital download cards, what is the incentive for them to even take of shelf space and overhead with the console? Physical retailers won't go for it. That's the same with used games too. If they get rid of used games, what incentive does a huge company like Gamestop have for selling their products? Very little profit margin? Yeah, they won't have it.
