Games with a first-person perspective tend to make me feel a little dizzy and sick, to the point where the game stops being fun because of the feeling. Had the same problem with Mario Galaxy from all the rotation. Even the level "Eat Fuzzies, Get Dizzy" in Yoshi's Island did it to me. Sometimes it's worse than others, but it's pretty frustrating. I was just playing You Are Empty, a game from the latest Indiegala bundle, and after 10 minutes or so I had to put it down.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: Motion sickness with first-person games
Do you play on consoles sitting fairly close to the screen?
Motion sickness in first person games is usually caused by the narrow default field of view most games have. I can't handle anything much lower than about 80 horizontal and 56 vertical sitting here at my desk without eyestrain and a bit of a weird feeling in my head.

Older. Not wiser.
Re: Motion sickness with first-person games
It's gotta be the distance. Without much in the peripherals that isn't moving, it becomes disorienting. Now that I think about it, I had the same thing when playing Metroid Prime Hunters with the DS close to my face. That explains it.
Re: Motion sickness with first-person games
It's not a huge deal for me, but games like Marathon, or Metro for something newer (just read it had a locked FOV, and I remember not liking how claustrophobic it literally looked), yeah not a fan of these types of FOV.
I used to hate the helmet/HUD thing too back on 4:3 games, like Metroid Prime or whanot (thankfully it was an option there). But this sort of thing doesn't bother me as much with widescreen ratios.

Re: Motion sickness with first-person games
For me it's definitely triggered by "bad" graphics. This really sucks because it makes it hard to enjoy older 3D titles. Also I get motion sickness if I've been playing something for a long time, especially if it's fast-paced.

I had not played a FPS in a while, and I was noticing in Far Cry 3 I was having the same issue, getting dizzy, motion sickness. I almost thought I wasnt going to be able to play, but I seemed to get used to it and didnt have a problem after. I have a 42 inch TV and sit 8 or so feet away.

Worth noting Far Cry 3 has screen tearing on the consoles. I personally didn't really notice it much, but I know it's been complained about from a lot of others from what I've seen.jay_red wrote:I had not played a FPS in a while, and I was noticing in Far Cry 3 I was having the same issue, getting dizzy, motion sickness. Darkstalkers was one that bothered the heck out of me with this though, it was very grating and I'm sure I would've gotten headaches if I played it for awhile... I just saw one of my friends play it.

Re: Motion sickness with first-person games
the only game that's ever given me motion sickness was the first time I played radiant silvergun. It only happened the first time though, which I find kind of odd. It was something with the backgrounds.
I suck at FPS games, and can't find my way around maps to save my effing life.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.
Re: Motion sickness with first-person games
Funny you brought this up now. I'm working on a new game about an eyeball on a string that spins around and I actually had to slow down the spinning background because I was feeling ill. And my favorite series is Sonic and I've never felt dizzy from a game before.

Re: Motion sickness with first-person games
I mostly get that with older FPS games like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, etc. I don't have that problem with modern FPS. Other than that, I don't usually have that problem. Therefore, I tend to stay away from older FPS. It wasn't easy to play Dark Forces for last years Together Retro but I didn't get severe motion sickness. I guess I could always pop a Dramamine before playing.
