I don't know why they call macs so user friendly.
I played around with MacOSX and found it to be the most unintuitive pile of dog shit. Just to get shit done required some weird hotkey or other shit. Sorry to tell all the mac geeks out there... hotkeys are NOT intuitive.
Reason why; intuitive objects should be something the user would assume to be used for that purpose. If you have to "learn" a hotkey, it can not be assumed to be that use. The key delete doing the job of deleting objects is intuitive, as the process states specifically what it does. Hitting Ctrl+blah+blah to do something is NOT.
Also, a lot of other stuff I had to do required me to use macs terminal... ok, what makes THAT user friendly? Come on now... if I wanted to use terminal for everything I'd get Linux or Unix. Oh wait, you're built on Unix... ok... then why the FUCK did you change the commands around? Stick with the Unix commands, it's that fucking simple. I don't have the time to learn yet a THIRD list of commands to operate a computer (Unix, Dos/CommandPrompt, now Mac though it's Unix based?)
File management gets even more annoying. Unless I didn't look hard enough (I shouldn't have to look that hard) sorting files through directory trees was fucking shit. All my file management was done in the manner of how iTunes does it. Where finding out ACTUALLY where the files are located in a nuisance... so many retards I meet THINK their music in itunes is actually IN ITUNES. MacOSX places this same assumption on files. WTF!? Sorry, but I want to know exactly where on my computer my music is, how to get to it, and how to manage it with out having them placed in stupid folders all over my desktop... cause 'finder' is fucking useless... fuck you. And don't get me started on software, running it, finding it, all that shit. What the hell... it's easier in Linux to get new software... and that's fucked up cause Linux is HELL to install software on and locate the manner in which to run it (you who have used it know what I mean).
Then the most annoying thing in the world. I dump Mac OSX, I install Linux... yey, get to actually USE this fucking iBook for once.... nope, something went wrong one night. My girlfriend at the time spills vodka all over my shit and she pulls it apart and lets it dry. Thanks sweet heart. It sat on my kitchen table for 2 days until I found it (yeah she didn't tell me either). I scratch my head wondering why my iBook is in 8 pieces... and I go about putting it back together. Boot up and WTF! shit won't run? I ask the girl, she tells me what happen... I assume something must of shorted out in it or something.
But if something died inside why can I get all the way to the login screen, and terminal works (nothing else though, no GUI, that just crashes the computer). For months I'm digging around looking for the issue in Linux, there must be a problem with X-Windows or some boot files. Somethings going wrong, I'm checking log files... all kinds of stuff.
Then I notice this little thing on boot up, a failure in syncing the clock to the hardware clock? It keeps happening... what is this Syncing issue? Why would this really effect anything to much. OH WAIT, the stupid Firmware clock has reset to some retarded year (something like 1943 or some shit) and stays stuck there everytime it restarts. OK, how the HELL do I get into the BIOS and change this?
... wait... Macs don't have BIOSs! What the hell do I do then? Oh hey check this they have Firmwares instead, yey... wait, only some G3s (I have a G3) and newer Macs have editable firmwares... the older ones can't be accessed and fixed. WHAT!? ::crosses fingers::, YEY mine can be edited. How do I do that?
...
yey, a 6 key combination at boot, and a fucked up ass terminal style editing mechanism... in the shit ass fake Unix commands that Mac uses! GREAT, and if I fuck this up I can destroy my computer. AWESOME... hundreds of dollars down the fucking hole because I tried to reset a fucking clock! What the hell... on my PC it tells me right at boot on the POST screen the ONE key I have to push to enter the BIOS and it is fairly easy to move around in and figure out what shit is and does. Yeah real fucking user friendly Mac man!
Luckily I'm not an idiot, fixed my issue and got the thing back and running.
Thing still sucks though... fuck you Mac, stick to MP3 players next time.
and then cost... COST! You've got to be a God damn millionaire to own these things. Or not mind running on the same hardware for 5 years after it becomes outdated. I can upgrade my PC, add a new vid card, new processor, new RAM. In a Mac... maybe some RAM, a small handful of vid cards possibly... maybe... if you have a tower. A Processor though? NO, don't even think about it, most processors are soldered right on the main board...
wait, WHAT! Soldered directly to the fucking mainboard? What if the mobo goes bad, something shorts out, all the onboard shit goes capoot, I have to buy a new mobo now AND processor... actually you are better off buying a whole brand fucking new computer.
The RAM is usually the same as well... yeah you can upgrade by adding one in the upgrade RAM slot... but the initial RAM on the machine is soldered directly to the board... crap now if I need to replace the mainboard I have to throw out a processor AND RAM!? Fuck you! I can't even replace the RAM with faster RAM... you're just screwed all around.
oh and sorry to let you Mac nerds know. There is only one reason why there isn't a LOT of viruses for the mac, because they DO exist. It's because no one uses them. If you want to infect a large group of users, go after Windows users, cause that's where they ALL are. But hey, if everyone and their brother starts buying these plastic piles of dog feces... guess what comes with that new member of your "community"... VIRUSES! YEY!!!! enjoy your spam bitch... oh wait, you already get spyware anyways, it's already happening to you. Have fun, welcome to your spam'O'box that cost 3X more then my spam'O'box!
[EDIT]
wow, I didn't know I typed so much in the process of writing that. I must hate macs or something!

^^ Wow that is quite a rant....all bullshit though.
(You seem to be taking your Windows thinking and applying it to the Mac world, thats the problem. Terminal window? who uses that? Hotkeys to do everything, since when? Mac going wrong and replacing parts swapping out this and that? (Apple will usually fix it for free if your Mac ever were to actually go that wrong...which is unlikely), again Windows thinking and applying it to the Mac world....that rant baffles me)

haha thats hilaroius someone with the name mucx or macx it should be just magically appears to defend apple the one time someone on this site rants about how much macintoshi computers suck.
and as a judge i must look at both sides objectively, however macx you lost. you didn't counter if any his points directly and you could say was "don't think like a windows user".

the whole problem is that they have to do everything the opposite of windows to be "different and better". windows bar is on the bottom, so theres is on the top. two button mouse, perfect idea.. no they have to use one button. windows is ugly, so os 9 is uglier. but sadly, apple is starting to gain market share, which will be bad for us. so we have to do something about it!
do something about it? what in the world are you talking about?mason wrote:the whole problem is that they have to do everything the opposite of windows to be "different and better". windows bar is on the bottom, so theres is on the top. two button mouse, perfect idea.. no they have to use one button. windows is ugly, so os 9 is uglier. but sadly, apple is starting to gain market share, which will be bad for us. so we have to do something about it!
gain market share? ya from 4% of PC users to like 10% of PC users... phear the takeover
and for the record Apple had the GUI first, hey came up with "bars on windows" first and it was microsoft who changed the set up to be "original" or "not a copyright infringement" if you prefer hah
that doesn't change the fact that I don't own a mac, and I think they are a waste of money
but people need to calm down
mason you came here for help, then proceeded to bash the thing you want help with.
that won't encourage the people who have the answer to help you
I don't have a working Mac right now but I've used and supported them for year. And generally speaking, a large proportion of the populace does get along with Macs better and more easily when they actually give them a chance.
LoD, sounds like you are working with an older Mac. The time sync issue could be A. Not getting the time properly from the internet (unlikely, but the settings are in the control panel) or B. the clock battery is dead and thus not holding the time. (more likely, typical PC problem as well).
Mason, let's keep in mind that the MAC pioneered consumer PC GUIs. The Apple menu at the top with the rest of the menus came before Windows existed, so Apple isn't trying to be opposite Microsoft. I could rant about how poor the Start Menu is from a usability standpoint but I think it would go over too many heads. Also, Apple now ships multi-button mice. Apple's OS X has had support for 2 button mice all along and recognizes them natively, but Apple has long labored under the theory that regular (read non-power) users don't need contextual menus and right clicks to get their work done. In Windows it's become a necessity. There are some functions you can only get to with right-clicks. On the Mac the functions on the right-click are all redundant and accessible elsewhere, though the menus and what-not.
Also, the Mac has very few functions, if any, that are accessible through keyboard shortcuts only. Apple is generally quite good about providing direct menu or interface access to most functions.
As for the "fake" Unix commands... OS X is based on NetBSD and NeXT, both Unix certified. In fact, OS X is Unix certified. That means OS X *IS* Unix. No fake about it. And for regular use nobody should be required to go into the terminal or do a single user mode (command line) boot.
It really sounds, LoD, like you've been working with a lemon. Find a proper Mac that's been well-maintained and you'll almost never have a problem. I never had OS X 10.4 crash on me ever. Can't say the same for 10.1 or 10.2, but 10.4 was just about perfect in stability and functionality.
Oh, and I find file management in OS X much easier than in Windows. Maybe that's just me. It just makes more sense.
If you have any real problems you need help with I'll be happy to try and help you. But I'm not sympathetic to the kind of bitching posted here. If you are steeped in Windows and have never used a Mac you can't expect it to just work like Windows.
